Missions Win AgainJune 19, 2013 - Texas League (TL) - Corpus Christi Hooks Press Release
The Hooks (42-29) have lost four straight since clinching the Texas League South Division first-half championship last Friday. The Missions are 39-31 after winning five of six.
Andriese (8-1), who allowed just two hits, walked three and fanned three. Fifty-three of his 88 pitches found the strike zone.
Johan Limonta and Jeudy Valdez had three hits each for the visitors; Valdez clubbed a solo homer in the ninth off Gonzalo Sanudo.
Limonta singled home Cory Spangenberg (walk/steal) for a 1-0 first-inning lead against Ruben Alaniz. The Missions doubled their advantage in the second, Valdez' one-out triple into the left-field corner fronting a sacrifice fly by Adam Buschini.
Alaniz was victimized for two runs on one hit and two fielding miscues during the fourth. A.J. Kirby-Jones advanced into scoring position as the result of an error on right fielder Domingo Santana. Kirby-Jones scored when Buschini bounced into a double play. Rico Noel's two-out single through the right side sent Rocky Gale across the pay station. Gale reached when Hooks second baseman Enrique Hernandez was unable to smoothly transfer the ball from glove to hand.
Alaniz (2-7) failed to record a fifth-inning out, surrendering consecutive singles to Yeison Asencio and Limonta. Jorge De Leon came to the rescue, fanning Jake Blackwood and coaxing Kirby-Jones into an inning-ending double play.
Alaniz, charged with seven hits and two earned runs, walked three and struck out two.
Noel was at it again in the sixth, his two-out nine-iron shot dropping just inside the left-field line for a double and scoring Gale (lead-off single/wild pitch).
Corpus Christi then put a singleton on the board with Jonathan Meyer's two out double scoring Erik Castro, who'd drawn a base on balls from Ryan Kelly.
The Missions grabbed that run back and more - extending their lead to 7-1 - as Valdez and Buschini contributed seventh-inning RBI singles.
Meyer's two-run blast over the left-field berm on Jeff Ibarra's 88-mph fastball highlighted Corpus Christi's three-run eighth. Meyer owns a six-game hitting streak.
The series concludes Wednesday at 7:05 when Mike Foltynewicz (2-0) takes the mound for Corpus Christi against Keyvius Sampson (4-4). It's Whataburger Family Day, so parents buy one ticket and get their child's admission free.
