East Division Wins MWL All-Star Game, 6-5

Dayton, Ohio-Lansing's Dalton Pompey lined a base hit to center field to bring in Brandon Drury from third base with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the East Division All-Stars defeated the West Division All-Stars 6-5 on Tuesday night. A crowd of 8,746 attended the game at Fifth Third Field in Dayton.

West Michigan second baseman Devon Travis was named the game Most Valuable Player. Travis was 2 for 2 with a three-run triple in the fifth inning as the East built a 4-2 lead.

Dayton's Zach Vincej delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the East Division team a 5-2 lead before the West Division scored three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game. The West Division rally was keyed by a based-loaded two-run single by Niko Goodrum of Cedar Rapids that made it 5-4 and advanced Clinton's Jabari Henry to third. Henry then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, South Bend's Drury led off the inning with a double to the gap in right-center field, and his Silver Hawks teammate Alex Glenn drew a walk. With one out, Vincej grounded into a fielder's choice as Drury went to third with two outs. Pompey followed with a hard smash to the left of the shortstop that brought in Drury to end the game.

A total of 61 players participated in the game. The East Division used 14 pitchers including 10 over the final five innings. Travis was the only East Division player with more than one hit. For the West, Carlos Correa of Quad Cities, Dan Vogelbach of Kane County, and Renato Nunez of Cedar Rapids each had two hits. Travis' three-run triple, Drury's double in the bottom of the ninth, and Vogelbach's RBI double in the second were the game's only extra base hits.

No pitcher went more than one inning, but top pitching performance was turned in by Burlington's Alex Keudell of the West Division, who struck out the side in order in the sixth inning.

Four Dayton pitchers are saw action and none of them were scored upon. Sal Romano pitched a scoreless fourth inning while Ben Klimesh, Alejandro Chacin, and Sean Lucas each worked one-third of an inning. Vincej was 1 for 2 with an RBI while Winker played the entire game in left field, going 0 for 4. He was one of two players to play all nine innings, joining West Division second baseman Jorge Polanco of Cedar Rapids.

The East Division won the pre-game Home Run Derby with 19 home runs compared to 13 for the West. The team was made up of Drury, Dayton's Jesse Winker, and local 11-year-old participant Ethan Tedder. Winker won the individual title by connecting on 10 home runs, five more than any other participant.

The Dragons will open the second half on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at home against the Lake County Captains. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 and Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372. Notes: Hall-of-Fame second baseman Joe Morgan threw out the ceremonial first pitch while his former Big Red Machine teammate George Foster presented the trophies to the winners of the Home Run Derby...Fans viewed a video greeting from former Dragons Joey Votto, Todd Frazier, Jay Bruce, Zack Cozart, and Ryan Hanigan, all now members of the Reds, expressing their positive memories of their time in Dayton.
