Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers caught fire in the sixth inning of Tuesday night's contest at All Pro Freight Stadium, scoring three times with two outs and took the opening game of the series from the Normal Cornbelters, 4-3.

The victory for the Crushers (12-16) marked the first time they'd won a series opener in nearly two weeks, while the loss for the Cornbelters (17-11) was their third in their last four games.

The big sixth inning rally started with a two out walk issued to Daniel Bowman. Bowman stole second, and then scored the game tying run on Russ Moldenhauer's single to right field. Emmanuel Quiles followed with a double down the left field line, and Moldenauer scored on the play after Normal catcher Jenzen Torres dropped the throw at home plate. Quiles scored the final run of the inning moments later on Ricardo Lizcano's single.

Prior to Lake Erie's sixth inning rally, the Cornbelters got on the board first, plating a run in the top of the first inning. T.J. Gavlik reached on a fielder's choice, and scored on Matt Wright's two-out RBI single.

Normal scored again in the seventh, on Patrick McKenna's first of two homeruns on the night. His homer brought the 'Belters within a run (3-2) before the Crushers put one more run on the board in the bottom of the seventh on Andrew Davis's RBI single.

The Cornbelters scored one final run in the top of the ninth. McKenna hit a fly ball to deep center field that Lake Erie center fielder Kevin Berard lost in the lights. The ball landed behind Berard, went all the way to the wall and resulted in an inside the park homerun.

Dave Middendorf (4-2) was outstanding for the Crushers, allowing just a pair of runs on five hits while fanning five over eight solid innings in a winning effort. Dale Dickerson (3) allowed a run on a hit while holding the lead in the ninth to score the save. Ryan Demmin (2-2) took the loss after surrendering four runs, two earned on 10 hits over six innings of work.

All but one in the starting lineup hit safely at least once for the Crushers, and Max Casper led the way, going 3-for-5 on the night with a trio of singles. Anderson Hidalgo went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, and Juan Sanchez had a pair of hits as well in a 2-for-4 performance. Davis's run scoring single in the seventh extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

The Crushers will continue their three game series against the Normal Cornbelters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Wednesday night. The Crushers will start right hander Matt Smith (2-1, 3.51) and the Cornbelters will start righty Drew Provence (2-1, 3.46). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
