San Jose Earthquakes Pick up Road Win against Colorado Rapids, 2-1

June 16, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - San Jose Earthquakes News Release

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Steven Lenhart and Sam Cronin scored to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

The Earthquakes (4-6-6, 18 pts.) burst out of the gates to take the lead in the 11th minute. Justin Morrow sent a pass in the air that Alan Gordon nodded forward to his strike partner. Lenhart pulled the ball back and then fired between a pair of defenders from 23 yards out, beating Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin to the top shelf. The goal was Lenhart's first of 2013.

Cronin was next to the scoreboard in the 52nd minute. San Jose's central midfield pairing teamed up to create the chance as Rafael Baca looped a perfectly weighted pass over Colorado's defense to Cronin on the run. The 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star nominee slotted his shot past Irwin for his first career game-winning goal.

Colorado (5-5-5, 20 pts.) pulled one back in the 67th minute, but couldn't find an equalizer. Brian Mullan sent a cross into the box and found Nathan Sturgis open at the top of the 6-yard box. Sturgis leapt and headed in his third goal of the season.

San Jose held an advantage in possession for the night, including a 57-43 margin in the second half.

The match was also Mark Watson's first as interim head coach, marking the sixth time an Earthquakes head coach has won his first game on the sidelines. San Jose's head coaches are 6-1-0 all-time in their first game with the club.

The Earthquakes return to action on Saturday, June 22 at D.C. United's RFK Stadium. Kickoff is 4 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
