Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, Calif. - Chris Heston threw his first career shutout as the Fresno Grizzlies beat the Tucson Padres 2-0 in the final game of the series on Thursday at Chukchansi Park.

After Wednesday's 12-inning marathon, the Fresno bullpen was in dire need of a day of rest, and Heston made sure he did his part. The right-hander threw 114 pitches in his season-long outing. He matched his season-high for strikeouts with nine, including striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Heston faced only two situations in which there were runners in scoring position. In the fourth, with Gregorio Petit standing on second base, Jonathan Galvez lined out to a well-positioned Chris Dominguez at third base, who doubled up Petit at second for the inning-ending double play.

In the ninth, Heston walked his first and only two batters, including a free pass to Cody Decker with two outs to load the bases. Heston promptly caught Rene Rivera looking to end the game.

With a shutout being twirled by Heston on the mound, the Grizzlies offense did just enough to back up the effort. Gary Brown hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth to make it 1-0. It gave Brown at least one extra-base hit in his last five games. He has hit three homers in his last four games.

Johnny Monell added an insurance run for the Grizzlies with a sacrifice fly that scored Carter Jurica. Monell went 2-for-3 with the RBI.

Jurica, meanwhile, tallied three hits, his second consecutive game with three base hits. He is 6-for-9 in his last two contests.

Burch Smith suffered the loss for Tucson despite allowing just one run over six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

The back-to-back wins for Fresno are their first consecutive victories since May 19-20. It was the Grizzlies' second shutout of the year.

The Grizzlies will welcome the Salt Lake Bees to Chukchansi Park on Friday to start a four-game series. Right-hander Fabio Castillo will take the bump for Fresno and face the Bees' right-hander Jarrett Grube.
