RailRiders vs. IronPigs - Game Notes - June 13, 2013

June 13, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

LAST TIME OUT: The RailRiders had the day off on Wednesday, but secured a doubleheader sweep from the International League North's second place team, the Buffalo Bisons. SWB overcame a 3-0 deficit to win game one, 6-5. They went on a 6-0 scoring run, only to have to hold off the Bisons who put the tying run on base in the seventh inning. Melky Mesa made a highlight reel catch by slamming into the wall in center field. He homered in his next at-bat, his team-leading ninth of the season. Mesa later exited the game. Ivan Nova allowed three runs over five innings to earn his second win in as many starts for SWB. In game two, the RailRiders used a five-run third inning to beat the Bisons, 6-5. Dan Johnson, who also homered in game one, powered a two-run shot in the third. Dellin Betances worked the fifth and sixth innings to earn his fourth victory of the season.

RAINRIDERS: After the rainout on Monday, the RailRiders have been postponed 10 times this season due to weather, including three home dates. The RailRiders and Bisons have had almost as many rainouts in their season series (4) as they have had actual games. They still have doubleheaders looming against Rochester and Syracuse, and have two doubleheaders to play when they travel back to Buffalo.

DOUBLEHEADER (NO) TROUBLE: SWB is 4-0-2 in double-dips, sweeping each of its last four (at Charlotte twice, at Gwinnett, vs. Buffalo) after splitting its first two (at Buffalo, vs. Syracuse). The RailRiders own the league's best winning percentage in doubleheaders with a mark of .833, and their 10 wins are three better than Buffalo, who ranks second with seven. Outside of SWB and Buffalo, no other team in the International League has more than four wins in double dips.

SUPER NOVA: Ivan Nova made his second start with the RailRiders in game one on Tuesday, and recorded his second victory in a SWB uniform this season. While his start against Syracuse on June 5 proved to be much more dominant, when he allowed just two hits over six shutout innings. However, Nova still displayed swing and miss stuff on Tuesday, as he struck out seven batters over five frames. Nova had issues with finding the strikezone early, but settled into the game and threw three scoreless frames after allowing two runs in the first inning and one in the second.

WHAT A DAN JOHNSON WE HAVE: Coming into the 2013 campaign, many speculated that the biggest power bat in the SWB lineup would be Dan Johnson. The left-handed hitting slugger has struggled at times (.174 batting average in April), but he seems to be turning a corner and might be headed for a hot streak.Johnson hit two home runs and added a double in SWB's doubleheader sweep of Buffalo on Tuesday. He now has eight home runs on the season, good for second on the club behind Mesa. Johnson owns a modest four-game hitting streak, and has driven in at least one run in three of his past four contests.

ALL GOOD THINGS: Addison Maruszak lost his season-long hitting streak at 11 games with an 0-for-3 showing on Sunday. During his string of success, he hit .368 (14-for-38) with four doubles, one triple, one homer, seven RBIs and nine runs scored. He lifted his season-long contact clip from .194 on May 17 to .245. Before the streak, he had not owned an average that good since May 7. He fell one game short of Zoilo Almonte's 12-gamer from April 25-May 7 for the team's best 2013 hit streak. Maruszak entered Sunday tied for the IL's second-longest active streak. Jackie Bradley, Jr., who was optioned back to Pawtucket Saturday, returned to the IL with a hit on Sunday to stretch his streak to 13. The PawSox were rained out last night. Gwinnett's Tyler Pastornicky also lost an 11-game string on Sunday. Maruszak wasted no time starting a new streak, as he hit safely in both of the games on Tuesday, putting his average at .244.
