Xander Bogaerts to Join Pawucket Red Sox

June 13, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The PawSox will welcome the #1 rated prospect in the Red Sox organization (according to Baseball America among others) as SS Xander Bogaerts has been promoted from Double-A Portland and will join the PawSox tonight when Pawtucket hosts Buffalo at 7:05 pm at McCoy Stadium. The 20-year-old standout was hitting .311 in 56 games for Portland with 12 2B, 6 3B, 6 HR and 35 RBI. His .311 average was 10th best in the Eastern League and his 6 triples tied for the league lead.

Bogaerts played 47 games at shortstop (9 errors) and was used as the DH in 9 games. In the month of June he was batting .424 (14-for-33) in 10 games, he had hit safely in 19 of his last 23 games at a .369 clip (31-for-84 with 4 HR & 19 RBI), and he had reached base safely 40 times in his last 16 games. Furthermore, he reached base safely in 51 of his 56 games played with the Sea Dogs this season.

Born in Aruba, the 6'3", 185 lbs. Bogaerts speaks fluent English, Spanish, Dutch, and Papiamento. Xander won't turn 21 until this October 1 and as such is the youngest position player ever to appear for the PawSox at 20 years, 8 months, and 12 days (if he plays tonight). RHP Jeff Suppan was 20 years, 8 months, and 1 day old when he made his PawSox pitching debut on August 3, 1995.

Bogaerts was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in August of 2009 and finished high school first before joining the Dominican Summer League Red Sox in 2010. At age 18 he was playing for Single-A Greenville in 2011 (.260 with 16 HR & 45 RBI). Last season he was named Boston's Minor League Offensive Player of the Year when he combined between 104 games for Salem (A) and 23 games for Portland (AA) to hit .307 with 37 2B, 20 HR, and 81 RBI. Most of the 2012 season was spent in Salem before he joined Portland in August as the youngest position player in the Eastern League. He promptly homered in his Double-A debut on August 9 at Akron. In 319 career minor league games including this season he is hitting .298 (359-for-1204) with 45 HR & 204 RBI.
