Honkers Fall to a 12th Inning Blast

(Rochester, MN) - Adam Martin, of the St. Cloud Rox, drove a three-run homerun over the left field fence in the top of the 12th inning to lift the Rox to a 5-2 win over the Rochester Honkers Sunday, June 9, at Mayo Field. Due to the rain in the afternoon, the start of the game was delayed by three hours.
Brandon Stennis (Doane College) made the start, his third of the season, and struck out six St. Cloud hitters in three innings of work, while allowing just one hit. Jon Woodcock (Crowder Junior College) relieved him and ran into trouble in the top half of the fifth inning when he loaded the bases with no outs. He was able to keep the ball in the infield and hold keep the score tied at 0-0. Woodcock allowed two hits in his three shutout innings.
Toby Thomas (Pensacola State) started the Honkers half of the seventh inning with a single, he stole second base and came around to score on a single from Tyler Krekling (Riverland Community College) to give the Honkers a 1-0 lead after seven innings of lead after seven innings of play. Thomas added a RBI to his stat line in the eighth inning when he reached on a fielder's choice to score Alex Greer (Iowa Western) and Rochester took a 2-0 lead into the ninth inning.
Christian Helsel and Dustin Breshears singled for St. Cloud in the ninth inning to set up a two-run, game-tying single with two outs from Devin Pearson to tie the game 2-2 and force extra innings. Pearson led the Rox offense by going 4-for-4.
The Honkers lead-off man reached base in each of the next three innings, but Rochester left a runner in scoring position in each inning and the game headed to a 12th inning. Pearson started the 12th inning with a bunt single for the Rox, pinch hitter Carlos Leal singled to set up Martin's go-ahead homerun.
Thomas went 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored on the day. Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) led the Honkers offense with three hits. Stephen Paladino (Felician College) pitched two perfect innings in relief for Rochester. Hayden Edwards (Kansas) took the loss (1-1,) he allowed three runs in one inning of relief. Adam Maxon (1-1) earned the win with a pair of scoreless innings for St. Cloud.
The two teams will finish the two game series Monday, June 10 at Mayo Field. Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State) is slated to make his first start of the season for Rochester (5-7.) Jason Hoppe (Minnesota State-Mankato) is also scheduled to make his first start of the season for St. Cloud (7-5.)
