West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps and Lansing Lugnuts wrapped up a stretch of four games in less than 25 hours on Sunday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader at Fifth Third Ballpark that was highlighted by a 10th-inning walk-off single from Jared Reaves in the opener.

The 'Caps and Lugnuts also played a doubleheader on Saturday night in which Lansing claimed two shutout victories.

Sunday's game-winning hit by Reaves capped a 4-3 win for West Michigan (29-33) in the first game and snapped a four-game losing streak. Lansing (28-33) countered with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap, blanking the Whitecaps for the third time in the series and dooming West Michigan to their fourth shutout loss in an eight-game span.

Elsewhere around the Midwest League, a victory by Fort Wayne over Dayton officially eliminated the Whitecaps from the first-half playoff race with one week remaining before the All-Star break.

Game 1 was tied at 3-3 in the 10th inning before Reaves capped a 3-for-6 ballgame by delivering the last of the Whitecaps' 14 hits.

The decisive rally started when Lansing reliever Tucker Donahue issued a leadoff walk to David Gonzalez and Austin Schotts followed with a single through the left side. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Donahue intentionally walked Danry Vasquez to load the bases.

Four pitches later, Reaves laced an 0-2 offering into left field to end the extra-inning contest after three hours and 23 minutes.

Angel Nesbitt (2-1) earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, combining with Josh Turley as the bullpen allowed just one hit over 4.1 shutout frames. Donahue (2-2) took the loss for Lansing, facing five batters but recording just one out as the fifth Lugnuts' pitcher to take the mound.

The big blow of the second contest came from Kevin Patterson, who belted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to account for all of the game's offense.

The home run was the only hit allowed by Julio Felix (0-3), who took the loss despite a strong spot start. The righty from Arizona retired the first 10 batters that he faced before a fielding error in the fourth. The miscue gave the Lugnuts an extra out to work with, resulting in Patterson's two-out bomb later in the inning. Both of the runs were unearned for Felix, who struck out three without issuing a walk over four innings of work.

Heralded Toronto Blue Jays' prospect Roberto Osuna (2-2) made it stand up with a fantastic start after being activated from the Disabled List earlier in the day. Making his first start since April 30, the talented 18-year-old dealt five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits, striking out five without issuing a walk.

Wil Browning (4) worked the final two innings to record the save and complete a combined three-hit shutout.

The Whitecaps wrap up an eight-game, six-day homestand with the finale of a five-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark. LHP Jordan John (4-3, 3.24) will take the mound for West Michigan opposite RHP Javier Avendano (4-3, 5.24) of the Lugnuts in a game that will feature a mini bat giveaway for the first 500 kids. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
