Great Lakes Loons News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Great Lakes Loons scored three runs in each of the first two innings Friday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps and never looked back in a 10-4 victory in front of a crowd of 7,435 at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Loons' six early runs knocked West Michigan starter Jake Thompson - a second round selection of the Tigers last year out of high school in Texas - out of the game after just two innings. In the first inning, shortstop Jared Reaves allowed a potential double play ball go under his legs with no outs to bring home an earned runs. The next two runs scored by the Loons - on an RBI single by Corey Seager and a steal of home by Eric Smith - were unearned.

In the second, Smith doubled home two runs and Ogle followed with a one-run double.

Great Lakes went up 7-0 when Kevin Taylor singled in the third to bring home Joe Winker. The Loons then added two more runs to their total on a long home run by James Baldwin in the fifth, his fourth homer of the year.

Angel Sanchez (2-6) collected his second win of the year with a quality start. He allowed three runs over six innings, striking out seven. He retired the first 11 batters he faced in the inning.

Smith finished the game with 3 RBIs. Leo Rodriguez reached base four times on a walk and three singles and scored thrice.

The Loons (20-40) begin a six-game homestand Saturday night at Dow Diamond with the first of three against the first-place South Bend Silver Hawks (47-17). Right-hander Zachary Bird (1-1, 6.44 ERA) is slated to start for the Loons against South Bend righty Brad Allen (2-1, 4.10). The game features a post-game Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning, and a Storybook Princess theme. Tickets are available at Loons.com or by calling 989-837-BALL. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com with streaming video available at Loons.com.

The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
