Pelicans Garner League-Best Five All-Star Selections
June 7, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The California League and Carolina League announced their All-Star rosters today in anticipation of the 2013 California-Carolina League All-Star Game at Municipal Stadium on June 18. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans lead the Carolina League with five selections: right-handed pitchers Nick Martinez, Luke Jackson and Alec Asher, along with infielders, Rougned Odor and Luis Sardinas.
Voting for each league was completed by the two leagues' managers, general managers and select media members.
Jackson, Martinez and Asher all rank among the league's top pitchers based on earned run average. Jackson, a supplemental first-rounder in 2010, leads the Birds and ranks fourth in the league with a 2.44 earned run average. Martinez ranks fifth at 2.73 while Asher is seventh at 2.83. The Pelicans are the only team in the league that has three qualifying starters with ERAs below 3.00.
Meanwhile, Sardinas and Odor - both 19 years old on opening day - will be heading to San Jose. Odor, a starter, leads the Pelicans with a .288 average through 56 games. Sardinas made the mid-summer classic as a reserve after hitting .277 with a team-best 16 stolen bases on the season. Sardinas led the Pelicans with a .300 batting average in the month of April and twice had four hits in a game during the month of May.
Martinez is a mid-season all-star for a second straight season, having been selected in the South Atlantic League in 2012.
The 2013 California-Carolina League All-Star Game will be played in San Jose, CA at Municipal Stadium, the home of the San Jose Giants. It will mark the first time that the team has hosted this event. Baseball's top prospects, representing 18 Major League teams and 18 Minor League affiliates, will descend upon Municipal Stadium on June 18 as two of the nation's elite Class-A Advanced leagues matchup in the 17th California-Carolina League All-Star Game. After last year's 9-1 victory by the Carolina League in Winston-Salem, N.C., the two Class-A Advanced circuits are deadlocked in the game's history with identical 7-7-2 records.
