Carolina Mudcats News Release
Wilmington, Del. - The Wilmington Blue Rocks jumped out to a five-run lead, and held on for a 6-4 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium. The Mudcats fell to 7-20 in the road, and 20-38 overall with the loss.
Sam Selman (4-4) picked up his second win for Wilmington (30-29) in three starts against Carolina. The southpaw held the Mudcats to one unearned run on three hits over five innings. Selman's Achilles' heel was four walks.
Nick Pasquale (0-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits through five innings. Francisco Jimenez silenced the Blue Rocks bats with three hitless innings to close the game.
Wilmington never trailed in victory, scoring a run in the first. Justin Trapp doubled to start the frame, and scored on a single by Daniel Mateo.
The Mudcats tied the game in the fourth. Charlie Valerio singled, and moved to second when Zack MacPhee reached on an error by Selman. Tyler Naquin then singled on a slow chop towards short, and Jack Lopez misplayed the hop. The error allowed Valerio to score.
The Blue Rocks wasted no time retaliating in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Chism's two-run single, with the two out and the bases loaded, gave the home team a 3-1 advantage.
Up two in the fifth, the Rocks increased the advantage by collectively hitting for the cycle. Daniel Mateo launched his fourth home run against the Mucats for a 4-1 lead. Lane Adams doubled, and scored on a triple by Jared Schlehuber. Jack Lopez followed with a run-scoring single for a 6-1 advantage.
Carolina attempted a rally over the back half of the game. Against reliever Kellen Moen, Paddy Matera singled to lead off the sixth. A triple by MacPhee drove in Matera. Naquin narrowly missed his fifth home run on a deep drive to right. Still, the sacrifice fly scored MacPhee, and cut the deficit to three.
Down 6-3 in the seventh, Jordan Smith laced a double to the right-center gap with one out. One out later, Ryan Battaglia lined a single to right that scored Smith. The RBI pulled the Mudcats to within a two, finishing off the scoring.
The Mudcats hope to salvage a split of the series on Thursday, June 6th. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. The Mudcats return home on Friday, June 7th. The first game against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans will feature Friday Night Fireworks, presented by Carolina Ford Dealers.
