Hessman Homer Helps Bats to 5-2 Win

May 28, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After a Memorial Day marathon on Monday, the Louisville Bats (25-27) and the Columbus Clippers (29-23) finished before the sun set on Tuesday night. Louisville used middle-inning production to down Columbus 5-2 behind a team effort by Tony Cingrani (W, 3-0) and the Bats' pitching staff.

The Clippers used only one pitcher in the game, as starter T.J. House (L, 1-3) went eight innings and threw only 101 pitches. Despite being economical with his pitch count, House allowed all five runs (only three earned) on nine hits and no walks. He struck out four.

The Bats did their damage in innings five and six when they plated the decisive four runs they would need to secure a victory. Mike Hessman blasted his team-leading 12th homer, and Corky Miller and Billy Hamilton collected an RBI apiece to support the winning effort.

Hamilton led off the Bats' first inning with a single and promptly stole his International League-leading 27th stolen base on the first pitch of the next at-bat. He came around to score the first run of the night when Felix Perez hit a sacrifice fly for his team-leading 33rd RBI of 2013, making the score 1-0.

Columbus got on the board in their half of the third, tagging Cingrani with his first earned run of the season after 21.1 scoreless innings. Ezequiel Carrera was the catalyst, as he led off with an infield single and stole second, advancing to third on a Miller throwing error. Cord Phelps singled in Carrera to even the score at one.

Lonnie Chisenhall's two-base throwing error in the fifth proved to be costly for Columbus. Emmanuel Burriss reached second on the throw out of play, and was able to speed around third and score on Miller's RBI single to give Louisville a 2-1 lead. Miller was moved to third on a Ray Chang double and later scored on a Hamilton sacrifice fly to extend that lead to 3-1.

Cingrani exited the game for the Bats after throwing 111 pitches in five innings of work. He allowed only one earned run on three hits and five walks while striking out nine Clippers.

Louisville continued to add on in the sixth. After Neftali Soto ripped a one-out double to right, Hessman unloaded on a home run to left and put the Bats up 5-1.

Carrera set up another Columbus run in the seventh when he walked and stole second base for the second time on the night. Two at-bats later, Phelps again singled in Carrera to give him his second RBI of the game and cut the Bats' lead to three at 5-2.

The Bats bullpen took the game the rest of the way behind quality innings from Mike MacDougal (H, 4) and Chad Reineke. They combined for four innings of work and allowed only one run on a few hits and no walks, striking out four.

Tomorrow is the final Education Day of the 2013 season at Louisville Slugger Field. It will be game three of this week's four-game set between the Bats and the Clippers is scheduled for an 11:05 a.m. first pitch. RHP Armando Galarraga (2-3, 2.66) will go for Louisville against Columbus RHP Trevor Bauer (2-1, 3.96).
