Tides Beat RailRiders in See-Saw Contest
May 28, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Norfolk, Va. - Tuesday night saw a seesaw battle between the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) and Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles), but a four-run eighth inning tipped the scales in favor of Norfolk, who held off a ninth inning rally from SWB to win, 10-8. The Tides took the lead on three different occasions until their eighth inning rally gave them the lead for good. Seven of the eight SWB runs were scored with two outs.
The Tides went out in front early with a three-run first inning. Jason Pridie led off with a walk, Brandon Wood then singled, and Ryan Flaherty cleared the bases with a home run to the left field bullpen.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre evened the score Melky Mesa led off with a double down the left field line, and Addison Maruszak followed with a double of his own to move Mesa to third. Corban Joseph then grounded out to second to advance Mesa home and Maruszak to third base. Thomas Neal continued his hot hitting, this time a double to left field that scored Maruszak. Zoilo Almonte sent Neal home with a double of his own to right field, which tied the game up at three.
Norfolk quickly answered with a run in the fourth. With two outs, Pridie doubled to right-center field, and scored on Wood's single to left field.
The RailRiders countered with a single run in the top of fifth. With two outs, Joseph reached on an infield single, moved to third on a single by Neal, and then scored when Almonte knocked a base hit to left field. The game was knotted up at four after four and a half innings.
Two runs came in to score for the Tides in their half of the fifth. Northeast Pennsylvania native Russ Canzler led off with his eighth home run of the season. L.J. Hoes followed with a single and later came around to score on Xavier Avery's double to ground-rule double to center field.
The game remained 6-4 in favor of Norfolk until the eighth, when SWB plated three runs to take the lead. With two outs, Josh Bell homered to right field. Melky Mesa followed with a single, and Maruszak walked to put runners on first and second for Bobby Wilson. The RailRider catcher delivered with a two-run double to left field, giving the RailRiders an 8-7 advantage.
The lead did not last long with the four-run Tides rally in the eighth. Pridie walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on a single by Canzler. Trayvon Robinson was then put in to run for Canzler, and came around to score on Hoes' base hit to right field. Hoes advanced to second on the throw after his single, which setup an intentional walk to Buck Britton. With runners at first and second, Wheeler doubled to deep left-center field, plating both runners to give the Tides a 10-7 edge.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre loaded the bases in the ninth inning with nobody out, but scored just one run. Bell legged out a fielder's choice that sent Neal home from third, but Jairo Asencio struck out Mesa to end the game.
Asencio (2-0) blew the save in the eighth, but finished the game and was handed the win.
Cody Eppley (2-2) worked most of the eighth inning and picked up the loss for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
SWB and Norfolk split the first two games of their four-game series, and the two teams will matchup in game three Wednesday night. Kelvin Perez (0-2, 6.17) will make a spot start for the RailRiders, while Jake Arrieta (2-2, 3.05) will take the mound for the Tides.
