Goedert's Blasts Lift Indianapolis over PawSox
May 28, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN. -- Three home runs in a 10-batter span propelled the Indianapolis Indians to a 7-2 victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Tuesday before a crowd of 4,440 at Victory Field.
The first and last of those long balls were supplied by cleanup hitter Jared Goedert, who led off the second inning and later connected with one out in the third off Pawtucket right-hander Terry Doyle.
In between, Jeff Larish launched a three-run shot to help Indianapolis avoid a fourth straight loss, while ending the PawSox's four-game winning streak. Larish's opposite-field drive, a wind-aided fly ball to left, gave the Indians a 4-0 lead that erratic lefty Andy Oliver nearly relinquished the next half inning.
Oliver, the International League leader in walks for the third straight season, loaded the bases by walking the first three hitters in the top of the third.
Ryan Lavarnway caromed a line drive off the leg of Oliver, who recovered in time to retire the batter, although a run did score on the play. Bryce Brentz then drew Pawtucket within 4-2 with an RBI single.
But after Goedert's second home run, his seventh overall, increased the difference to 5-2, the PawSox squandered a golden opportunity in the top of the fourth.
Oliver issued two more walks, among six in 3 1/3 innings, helping the Sox load the bases again. He was bailed out when Ryan Reid entered in relief and induced an inning-ending double play from Jackie Bradley Jr.
Reid (W, 5-1), a native of Portland, Maine, continued through the seventh en route to the victory, while Eric Cordier (S, 1) pitched the final two innings for his first save.
As for Doyle, he rebounded from Goedert's second big fly to retire the next 12 batters and keep the PawSox close.
But any hopes of a Pawtucket comeback were greatly diminished when Doyle's former Boston College teammate Tony Sanchez belted a two-run homer off Chris Martin in the eighth inning. It marked the first runs charged to Marin in 29-plus innings this season at Double-A and Triple-A.
Also of note, Bradley doubled in his final at-bat to finish 1-for-4 and extend his hitting streak to 12 games. He is now batting .354 overall.
As division leaders in the IL, the PawSox and Indians have split their first six meetings of the season, including the first two games of their current four-day series.
They're scheduled to continue the set Wednesday at 1:35 p.m., when Pawtucket's Graham Godfrey (3-3, 3.86) confronts Brandon Cumpton (4-2, 2.91).
