Clippers Outlast Bats 13-11

May 28, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Columbus Clippers News Release

The Clippers showed big time resolve as they defeated the Louisville Bats 13-11 in twelve innings at Louisville Slugger Field.

This game was a back and forth power display at the beginning. Louisville jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of first when Josh Fellhauer clubbed a two run homer over the right field wall. The Clippers would respond with a long ball of their own in the form of a Matt Carson solo homer in the first half of the second. An inning later, Cord Phelps tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single to right field.

The home run parade would continue. Mike Hessman got the lead back for the Bats with a solo homer in the bottom of the third. The very next inning, Jeremy Hermida clobbered a three run shot over the right field to give Columbus a 5-3 lead. Not wanting to be left out, Louisville's Felix Perez powered up on a solo bomb over the right field in the bottom of the fifth to draw the Bats to within one run of Columbus.

Louisville then tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth. Columbus had an opportunity to turn an inning-ending double play, but Juan Diaz's relay throw missed the first baseman Phelps, allowing Henry Rodriguez to score on the play.

The Clippers would respond in the top of ninth. Matt LaPorta cranked a two run shot over the left field wall as Columbus retook the lead 8-5. Lonnie Chisenhall added to the power display with a solo jack in the same frame, giving Columbus a three run cushion.

That Columbus lead would evaporate in the bottom of the ninth as the Bats scored three runs to force extra innings. The scoring frame was highlighted by RBI singles by Neftali Soto and Emmanuel Burriss. Once again, the Clippers would come off the mat with a three run tenth highlighted by a two-run double by Phelps and a LaPorta RBI single.

The Bats would retaliate in the bottom half of the tenth with a two run double off the bat of Felhauer. Soto hit another RBI single and the game was tied once again, this time an 11-11 affair. It would stay that way until the top of the twelfth. Chun Chen delivered for Columbus with a two run shot over the left field wall, giving the Clippers a 13-11 advantage.

Matt Langwell (S, 1) then came on for the Clippers in the bottom half of the twelfth. He would get Hessman to ground into a game ending double play. Rob Bryson (W, 1-1) was awarded the victory for Columbus. Jose Diaz (L, 1-2) took the loss for Louisville.

These two IL West rivals will get back at it on Tuesday night. It will be a pair of left-handers facing off on the mound as Clippers hurler T.J. House (1-2, 6.03) goes toe-to-toe with Louisville southpaw Tony Cingrani (2-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
