Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- What was expected to be a pitcher's duel Sunday between two of the mostly highly-touted right-handers in the minor leagues lived up to its billing; for three innings.
Thereafter, the match-up of Pawtucket's Allen Webster and Indianapolis's Garrit Cole turned into a 11-3 runaway in favor of the PawSox before 5,033 at McCoy Stadium.
The two clubs combined for just one baserunner through the first three innings. Webster, who entered with a 2.50 ERA in five starts, retired the first 11 batters faced, including a string of six straight strikeouts. Meanwhile, Cole, the top overall selection by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2011 draft and owner of a 2.55 ERA, gave up only a double to Brandon Snyder.
But Webster walked Felix Pie with two out in the fourth, preceding another base on balls and an RBI single by Jared Goedert to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
Webster and reliever Chris Martin then held Indianapolis scoreless the next three innings, despite combining for five more walks. Despite finishing with five walks and 92 pitches in five innings, Webster (W, 3-0) earned the win, with plenty of support from his teammates.
Cole retired the first two men in the home half of the fourth, but hit Snyder with his first pitch of the at-bat, allowed a single by Jeremy Hazelbaker and gave up a two-run, go-ahead triple by Jonathan Diaz. Diaz then scored on a balk.
Ahead 3-1, the PawSox expanded their lead on Justin Henry's RBI double in the fifth inning. They broke the game open, taking a 9-1 lead against Cole (L, 3-2) an inning later.
In all, Pawtucket scored five times in the sixth, collecting four hits and stealing three bases in the process. The key knocks belonged to Diaz, who had an RBI single, and Henry, who doubled home a pair. The other RBI resulted from sacrifice flies by Jose Iglesias and Brock Holt.
Indianapolis reached reliever Graham Godfrey in the eighth on a two-run home run by Alex Presley to draw within 9-3, only to see the Sox get those runs back in the bottom of the inning.
Holt, formerly with Indianapolis, doubled and scored on Jackie Bradley Jr.'s fielder's choice grounder. Bradley eventually came home on a single by Bryce Brentz.
NOTES: The PawSox finished with 11 hits, including two apiece by Henry, Snyder and Diaz...Henry and Diaz each drove in three runs...After splitting the first two games of their four-day series, Pawtucket is scheduled to start Steven Wright (2-1, 3.16) vs. Brooks Brown (2-0, 3.66) at 7:05 p.m. on Monday.
