Generals Fall In 10 Innings, Drop Third Straight

JACKSON, Tenn. (May 14, 2013) - The Generals' (19-18) dropped their third straight, despite a late inning serge, to the Smokies (15-21), 3-2 in 10 innings. Tuesday's game was Jackson's 18th one-run game this season. In those games, the Generals are 5-13.

After a scoreless half inning, the Generals' leadoff hitter Leon Landry (1-5, HR) homered to right to give Jackson an early 1-0 advantage. Generals' catcher John Hicks (1-5) gave the Generals their second hit of the game with a single to center. Brad Miller (2-4) extended his hitting streak to six games in his first at-bat with a single to right. Hicks was caught at third on Miller's hit trying to advance to third, then Miller was caught stealing for the second out of the inning. The Generals' started the game with three straight hits, but costly base running mistakes prevented Jackson from doing damage.

In the third, the Generals' shortstop Gabriel Noriega (2-4, 2 1B) broke the pitcher's duel with a single to center.

Ronald Torreyes ended the no-hitter with a double down the third base line for the Smokies. After Torreyes advanced to third on a wild pitch, Arismendy Alcantara grounded to second which was enough to score Torreyes. Halfway through four, the Generals and Smokies were knotted up 1 to 1.

One inning later, the Smokies took a 2-1 lead off the bat of Christian Villanueva, who homered to left.

Noriega added another single to his night in the sixth, but was forced out at second on a sacrifice attempt by Leon Landry. After a costly error by the Smokies third basemen Villanueva, Landry advanced to second and Hicks reached first. The Generals' most consistent hitter, Brad Miller, moved both runners over via ground ball to second. With two outs, Jackson's designated hitter Vinnie Catricala (0-3, BB) reached first by a walk to load the bases. James Jones (1-4, RBI, 3B) grounded out to short to end the potential attack for Jackson.

Miller led off the ninth with a drag bunt. He eventually came around and scored off of a deep RBI triple from James Jones. The run tied the game, 2-2.

In the tenth, Smokies shortstop Alcantara drag bunted the winning run in from third with two outs. The Smokies took a 3-2 lead which posed as the final in 10 innings.

In spite of the dominating starts by both the Generals' starter, Taijuan Walker (ND, 3-4, 7.0,4,2,1,1,6,1) and Tennessee starter Alberto Cabrera (ND, 4-1, 7.0,4,2,1,1,6,1), they both picked up a no decision. The Generals' reliever Nick Hill (L, 1-2, 1.0,2,1,1,1,0,0) suffered the loss. The Smokies' reliever Zac Rosscup blew the save in the ninth, but picked up the win for Tennessee. Frank Batista came in and closed out the game for the Smokies.

The Generals and Smokies will play game three of the five game series Wednesday at the Ballpark. Game time is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. CST. Jackson will send RHP Brett Shankin (2-1, 4.15) to the mound and Tennessee will start LHP Eric Jokisch (3-3, 4.17).
