 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

SWB Game Notes

May 14, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

SETTLE FOR A SPLIT: Ernesto Mejia's league-leading 10th home run, a no-doubt-about-it shot off Sam Demel (1-1), broke up a ninth-inning tie and Cory Rasmus followed with a perfect bottom nine. The result was a 3-2 loss for the RailRiders to the Gwinnett Braves (Atlanta) and a split of the four-game series.

TRIPLE-A TIME: Nik Turley's Triple-A debut went quite smoothly. He allowed just one run on two hits over six innings. The lone run came on a hit by rehabbing big leaguer, Jason Heyward. One of Turley's four strikeouts was a looking strikeout at Heyward's expense in his first at-bat. Turley, who was promoted from Double-A Trenton earlier in the day, left in line for the win. He was the Thunder's Opening Day starter this season and had just one day's notice that he would throw for Triple-A SWB.

GRANDYLICIOUS: The RailRiders' rehabber, three-time Major League All-Star Curtis Granderson, singled and walked in the setback. He hit .400 (8-for-20) during his stay with a home run. He had at least one hit in all of his five games played and saw two games in each corner outfield spot along with one game as the RailRiders' designated hitter.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Tonight the RailRiders ignite an eight-game road trip with the first of four against the Mud Hens. It starts a spurt with 16 of 20 away from PNC Field. The lone exception will be a four-game series/homestand against a talented Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay) team. At 12-2 (.857), the RailRiders own the best road winning percentage in MiLB. The next closest club is Advanced-A San Jose (Giants) at 14-3 (.824). Out of the 120 full-season minor league clubs, 60 entered today with a losing road record. Oddly, the IL is the league that diverges the most. Nine of the 14 teams in the loop have a winning road record, while Louisville is at .500 (8-8).

WHO'S ON FIRST?: Yesterday, Corban Joseph was recalled by the Yankees under MLB's 26th-man rule for doubleheaders. He made his Major League debut in the opener as the seven-hole hitter and starting first baseman. He had no professional starts at first base until making just three with SWB this season. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and ignited the team's lone double play, a 3-6-1 turn with Joseph's former SWB teammate Preston Claiborne on the receiving end. In game two of the twinbill, Joseph again batted seventh but started at second base. He got his first career big league hit with a leadoff double in the seventh. Joseph's former SWB teammate Austin Romine later doubled him home as Romine notched his first big league knock of 2013.

MORE MOVES: Other roster moves yesterday had last night's scheduled starter, Brett Marshall, recalled by the Yankees as bullpen insurance. Also outfielder Brennan Boesch got optioned to the RailRiders and last night's starter, Turley, got called up from Double-A Trenton. Today, Granderson's rehab officially concluded as the Yankees reinstated him from the DL and Vidal Nuno was optioned back to SWB. Boesch and Nuno are still in transit and do not count against the team's 25-man limit until they do so. Also, Joba Chamberlain begins a rehab assignment tonight and will start the game. Cotham, the scheduled man, follows. Turley has been sent back to Double-A Trenton and Joseph has rejoined the team from the bigs after his one-day "26th-man" role concluded.

THAT'S A START: The Opening Day battery for the RailRiders combined to start the second game of yesterday's double-dip for the Yankees. Nuno tossed five scoreless innings for a win in his first Major League start. He did so with Romine catching and batting ninth. Nuno notched the victory over the Indians, the team that gave him his start in pro ball as a 48th-round pick in 2009 before the Tribe released him after the 2010 season. Nuno became the first lefty other than CC Sabathia or Andy Pettitte to start for the Yankees since Kei Igawa in May 2008.
