Lewis' Plays the Hero as Snappers Walk-Off
May 11, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Chad Lewis cracked a walk-off, two RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Beloit Snappers a 3-2 triumph over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Midwest League action on Saturday afternoon at Pohlman Field with 585 fans on hand.
The Snappers take the first game of the series and now stand at 19-14. Cedar Rapids' record is now 23-10.
The drama began with one out in the ninth, Beloit facing a 2-1 deficit and pitcher Manuel Soliman (1-1) trying to earn the save. Rashun Dixon drew a walk and John Wooten lined a ball down the left field line and hustled it into a double. Lewis then hit a long fly to left that fell on the warning track, scored both runners and won the game. Ryan Dull (1-1) picked up the victory after getting all three outs in the ninth without a run against him.
This climactic finish came right after the Kernels looked like they would come away victorious, having produced some heroics of their own. In the top of the ninth, Jorge Polanco singled, was sacrificed to second and carried the go-ahead run across when Travis Harrison doubled off the center field wall. Unfortunately for them, their slim lead wouldn't be enough.
Tyler Duffey was on the mound to start the day for Cedar Rapids and he baffled the Snappers lineup. In seven frames, he gave up only one run on four hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out seven. The one run Beloit did get off him came in the second, when Rashun Dixon drilled a home run, his fourth, over the wall in right center.
For eight innings, the Snappers tandem of Michael Ynoa and Andres Avila were just as tough on Cedar Rapids' hitters. Ynoa started the game and did give up a run when Niko Goodrum's single scored J.D. Williams in the third, but the Kernels would get no more off him. The tall right-hander gave up only three hits, zero walks and racked up seven strikeouts. Avila was just as good in his four inning, one run, no walk, four strikeout stint. He held his opponents to three hits. One of those was Polanco's single to start the ninth, but all that did was set the stage for a fantastic finish.
The series continues on Sunday afternoon starting at 2:00pm as the Snappers send RHP Seth Streich (3-1, 5.02 ERA) to the hill to face Kernels RHP Jose Berrios (3-0, 2.55 ERA). Sunday, Mother's Day, will be a very special day at Pohlman Field, as the Snappers will be wearing pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off at game's end to help support breast cancer research, sponsored by Mercy Health System. The ballpark will also host another Stateline News Family Sunday. Sunday's Stateline News will have Buy-One, Get-One coupons for reserved seat tickets. At game's end the field will open up for fans to play catch in the outfield and run the bases.
