Miners Win Again in Extras

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners continue to win in extra innings as the Miners scored three runs to defeat the Gateway Grizzlies by a score of 4-2 at GCS Ballpark.

Gateway took an early 1-0 lead off Miners pitcher Trevor Harden in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Miners tied the game in the top of the eighth inning when Carlos Mendez hit a one out base hit and RBI scoring Brian Wheeler. Wheeler led the inning off with a single and moved to third base on a ground out to first by Ryan Curl. Gateway re-took the lead off Matt Sergey 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Miners scored three runs off Grizzlies pitcher Dan Eaton with one out in the top of the tenth inning. Gerardo Avila scored on a wild pitch with the bases-loaded to tie the game at two. Carlos Mendez gave the Miners a 3-2 lead with a base hit to score Brian Wheeler. The Miners capped off the scoring when Phil Butler hit a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Curl to win the game 4-2.

Blake Nation pitched three scoreless innings. Nick Gillung was awarded the win.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
