Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins have made a transaction that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster Wednesday afternoon during their contest with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Bragan Field in Jacksonville.

Infielder Derek Dietrich has been promoted to the Major League Miami Marlins, and will make his big league debut against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Wednesday afternoon.

In his 28 games for the Suns, Dietrich compiled a .282 average, adding four home runs and 16 RBI prior to his promotion. His four longballs were tied for second on the Jacksonville roster this season, with fellow former Sun Marcell Ozuna leading the club with five roundtrippers prior to his promotion on April 30.

Originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the second round of the 2010 draft out of Georgia Tech, Dietrich was acquired by the Marlins organization in a December 4, 2012 deal that saw INF Yunel Escobar go to Tampa. Prior to this season, Baseball America ranked the 23-year-old the 12th-best prospect in the Marlins' organization.

Dietrich will become the second member of the 2013 Jacksonville Suns to make his Major League debut this season, following Marcell Ozuna's call-up on April 30. Ozuna through his first eight games with the Marlins owns a .419 average (13-31), adding a home run and five RBI.

A corresponding roster move has not been announced.

Following this afternoon's contest with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, the two clubs will face off again Thursday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Bragan Field.
