Indianapolis Indians News Release
MOOSIC, PA -- Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (18-12) jumped out to an early advantage and held off a late Indianapolis (22-11) rally behind a strong starting effort from right hander Brett Marshall, who allowed just one run on four hits and struck out eight over 6.0 innings in the RailRiders 3-1 victory over the Indians on Tuesday night an PNC Field.
After being shutout by Indianapolis the night before, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre quickly got on the board on Tuesday night with a single score in the first frame. 2B Corban Joseph began the first inning rally with a lead-off double, before moving to third on single by LF Zoilo Almonte, and coming plateward on an RBI groundout by 3B Ronnier Mustelier.
Spotted the early score, Scranton starter Brett Marshall (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 SO) took over from there, holding the Indians scoreless over the first six innings of the contest by using his season-high eight punchouts to escape jams on his way to earning his second victory of the season.
Following Marshall, RailRiders' relievers Mark Montgomery (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB), Cody Eppley (0.2 IP, 2 BB), Juan Cedeno (0.1 IP) and Jim Miller (1.0 IP, 2 SO) combined for 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to finish out the win. For their efforts Montgomery earned his second hold, Eppley his third and Cedeno his team-best fifth, while Miller notched his third save with a perfect ninth.
The RailRiders did provide Marshall and the bullpen with a little more breathing room with two more scores in the bottom of the sixth. 1B Dan Johnson lifted a one out double to center, before eventually scoring a two-bagger of the bat of SS Gil Velazquez later in the frame. The continued defensive struggles of the Tribe allowed another run to come across later in the sixth as Velazquez was able to trot home on a miscue off the bat of DH Luke Murton.
These two runs proved to be key as the Indians were finally able to get to Marshall in the seventh. The rally began with back-to-back walks from RF Jerry Sands and CF Alex Presley, along with a RailRiders' miscue, loading the bases with just one out. LF Felix Pie then stepped to the plate and rolled a single through the right side for his game-high third hit of night. On the base hit by Pie, Sands slid in safely for the Tribe's first run, however in a key moment of the game, Presley, attempting to follow Sands, would be gunned down at the plate for the second out of the inning.
The single score ended up being all the Indians could muster in the frame and on the night as another rally attempt came up short in the eighth. After the Tribe loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch, Cedeno entered the contest for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and induced an inning ending groundout from 2B Ivan DeJesus. Overall, Scranton hurlers stranded 13 Indians' runners and held the Tribe to just a 1-for-10 effort with runners in scoring position.
Indianapolis starter Brandon Cumpton (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO) took a tough luck loss as the Triple-A rookie allowed just two earned runs and matched a season best with eight strikeouts over 7.0 innings pitched. The defeat ended Cumpton's personal two-game winning streak and dropped his record with the Tribe to 2-2 on the season.
Following Cumpton, Indianapolis reliever Mike Zagurski (1.0 IP, 3 SO) struck out the side in the eighth inning to give the Indians' 11 Ks on the evening. The 11 punchout performance was the Tribe's 17 double-digit strikeout effort of the season and gives them 300 strikeouts in 33 games so far in 2013.
The Indians and RailRiders will now continue their four-game series with a morning contest on Wednesday at 10:35 a.m. LHP Kris Johnson (2-2, 3.86 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Indianapolis, while Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is expected to send RHP Graham Stoneburner (2-1, 2.65 ERA) to the mound
The game will be carried on WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 10:15 a.m.
