Toronto FC announced Tuesday that it has acquired Scottish international defender Steven Caldwell on loan from Birmingham City F.C (Birmingham City).

Caldwell, 32, joins Toronto FC after spending the past two seasons with Birmingham City of England's Football League Championship Division. He made 90 appearances and scored two goals in all competitions for the club.

"We're pleased that Steven has agreed to join us on loan until July. He's a proven defender with great experience," said Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne. "We expect him to help shore up our defense."

Caldwell began his professional career with Newcastle United F.C. and spent time on loan at Blackpool F.C., Bradford City A.F.C., and Leeds United A.F.C. during his time with the Magpies. Caldwell signed with Sunderland A.F.C. ahead of the 2004-05 season and remained with the club for just over two seasons. He signed with Burnley F.C. (Burnley) in January 2007. Caldwell captained Burnley to promotion into the English Premier League by winning the 2008-09 Football League Championship playoff trophy. After leaving Burnley, Caldwell spent one season at Wigan Athletic F.C. He later signed with Birmingham City in July 2011.

Caldwell has earned 12 caps for the Scottish National team to date. He made his debut on April 25, 2001 during a 1-1 draw away to Poland.
