May 6, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The International League office announced today that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's (Triple-A/New York Yankees) Zoilo Almonte has been named the league's Player of the Week for April 29-May 5. He is the second RailRider to be honored by the IL this season. Durham right-hander Jake Odorizzi received Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Almonte hit .355 on the week with two of his three home runs. He led the loop during the span in hits (11) and RBIs (7). The 23-year-old also ran the team's best hitting streak of the season to 10 by hitting in all eight games on the road trip. Only Gwinnett's Jose Constanza has a longer active hit streak in the league at 11. Almonte has hit .368 during his run.
On the season, Almonte is hitting .293 (29-for-99) while leading the RailRiders in doubles (7) and RBIs (17). He has also excelled in the clutch, hitting .316 with men on base and two outs. He is the first SWB position player to receive weekly honors from the IL since Russell Branyan got a tip of the cap for his efforts from June 4-10, 2012. Earlier this season, southpaw Vidal Nuno took Pitcher of the Week for April 15-21.
The RailRiders open an eight-game homestand tonight with the first of four against the Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh Pirates) at 6:35 p.m. Fans will be able to dine on just a few dimes with dollar hot dogs all night long at PNC Field. Great ticket packages, group deals and single-game tickets are available. With no upper deck at PNC Field anymore, every seat in the ballpark provides the supreme views and intimacy that make minor league baseball so special at incredibly affordable prices.
