Loons Shut out by Timber Rattlers

MIDLAND, Mich. - On a beautiful spring afternoon at Dow Diamond, the Great Lakes Loons (12-17) lost to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (12-14) by a score of 5-0. The Timber Rattlers picked up two runs in both the first and second innings, and one more in the sixth en route to a road victory on Sunday.

Wisconsin jumped out to an early lead when cleanup hitter Victor Roache hit a 2-2 pitch 384 feet over the left field fence for a two-run home run.

The Timber Rattlers put two more runs on the board in the top of the second inning when Tyrone Taylor hit a line drive off Loons third baseman Paul Hoenecke's glove that went into left field, allowing Alfredo Rodriguez and Orlando Arcia to score.

Wisconsin added their fifth run of the game in the road half of the sixth. Three-hitter Mitch Haniger, who scored two runs in the game, doubled to left field and scored on a single from Adam Giacalone.

"We didn't put anything together today," Loons manager Razor Shines said. "We're in a rut. We're not doing anything offensively, we're not doing a good enough job defensively, we're not pitching as good as we can pitch, and we're not managing or coaching as good as we can do those things. But I do know we're not doing anything wrong in the effort department. As long as we continue to work hard, we'll turn this thing around."

Ryan Gibbard started for the Timber Rattlers and went five innings to pick up the win. He gave up three hits and struck out three, while walking two. Jorge Lopez pitched four scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season. Lopez struck out three and walked one.

Loons starting pitcher Lindsey Caughel went six innings and gave up five runs, although only three were earned. Caughel only gave up four hits and struck out six, while issuing just two walks.

"I thought I could've done a better job of getting ahead today," Caughel said. "My curveball was good and I was flipping it in there for strikes. But, when you get two outs and give a free pass to someone, that's not really my game plan."

Zachary Bird threw two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three, and Arismendy Ozoria struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning. Neither Loons relief pitcher gave up a hit.

Right fielder Jeremy Rathjen and designated hitter Tyler Ogle had four of the Loons five hits in the ballgame, with two hits apiece. One of Rathjen's hits was a double off the left field wall.

"I was just looking for a ball over the plate that I could drive and I was trying to put a good swing on it," Rathjen said. "I was fortunate enough to get a couple hits."

The Loons are back in action on Monday morning, with an early start against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to wrap up their three-game series. Angel Sanchez (1-3, 5.88 ERA) is expected to start for Great Lakes and the projected starter for Wisconsin is Eric Semmelhack (1-0, 5.40 ERA). First pitch is 10:35 a.m. The Loons are hosting School Kids Day on Monday and it is also a Social Media Monday.
