Lancaster Drops Game, Loses DeShields

May 4, 2013 - California League (CalL1) - Lancaster JetHawks News Release

ADELANTO, Calif. - In the sixth inning the JetHawks lost their lead. In the seventh inning, they lost their lead off man.

The JetHawks gave up four runs to the High Desert Mavericks in the sixth inning, losing their 3-0 lead, and ended up losing their second straight game, 5-3, on Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Then in the seventh inning, Delino DeShields slid down to a knee behind second base in an attempt to field a Ji-Man Choi ground ball and injured his left hand. He was removed from the game. No official announcement has been made on how much time, if any, he will miss.

DeShields had put the JetHawks ahead early in the game. After doubling in his first at-bat, the second baseman tripled his second time up to drive in Chris Epps in the third inning. He later scored on a Nolan Fontana ground ball.

The lead was plenty early in the game for starter Tommy Shirley. Shirley, making his first start of the season, allowed one hit over four scoreless innings. He fanned one and did not issue a walk.

Reliever T.J. Geith tossed a scoreless fifth inning and the JetHawks added a run in the sixth when Tyler Heineman doubled home Brandon Meredith.

Luis Cruz (1-2) entered in the sixth inning and couldn't hold the lead. With Jamal Austin at third base, Cruz threw a pitch in the dirt that skipped away from the catcher Heineman. Austin did not break for home but Heineman scrambled to the ball, picked it up and threw it home anyway. His toss was wild and rolled into foul territory allowing Austin to score.

Cruz then allowed a solo homer to Dan Paolini and later a two-run home run to Steven Baron to put the Mavs ahead, 4-3.

High Desert would put up another run in the seventh. Chris Taylor scored from second base on the Choi ground ball that injured DeShields.

Lancaster was shut down in the ninth by closer Stephen Shackleford who, after putting the tying runs aboard, got Epps to ground into a game-ending double play.

Bobby Shore (1-0) tossed 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen and picked up the win.

The JetHawks (16-12) are now just half a game ahead of High Desert (16-13) and Inland Empire (16-13) in the South Division standings. The third game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 2:05 pm at High Desert. Blair Walters (3-0, 4.40) will make the start. Coverage can be heard on AM 1380 and jethawks.com.
