Giants Held to Four Hits in 6-0 Defeat

May 4, 2013 - California League (CalL1) - San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants were held to four hits while also committing a season-high four errors in the field en route to a 6-0 shutout loss to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Quakes have won the first two games of the series as San Jose was shutout for the second time this season.

Rancho Cucamonga starting pitcher Garrett Gould (1-2) tossed six scoreless innings to pick-up his first win of the year. Gould allowed just three singles with no walks and eight strikeouts during his stint on the mound.

Ryan Cavan (2-for-4) had two of the four Giants hits to lead San Jose offensively. Cavan extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

The Quakes immediately jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Casio Grider started the game with a first-pitch bloop double down the right field line. Grider advanced to third on the play when right fielder Mac Williamson threw the ball wildly to second for an error. Grider then scored when the next batter, Noel Cuevas, grounded out.

Rancho Cucamonga extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of unearned runs against Giants starter Adalberto Mejia in the top of the third. Ryan Mount began the frame with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice fly. A botched pick-off attempt for an error moved Mount to third base with two outs and then Darnell Sweeney reached on a fielding error committed by Angel Villalona at first to allow the run to score. Two batters later, Angelo Songco doubled home another run to make it 3-0.

The Quakes added a run in the fifth against Mejia as Sweeney singled with two outs, stole second and third and scored on Songco's single. Then in the sixth, reliever Luis Rojas walked three batters to load the bases with one out before Cuevas grounded a two-RBI single into right field for a 6-0 advantage.

Mejia (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year after yielding four runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out four.

San Jose didn't manage their first baserunner of the game until Shawn Payne led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. The Giants finally put a runner into scoring position in the fifth as Williamson led off with a single and was at third with two outs when Eliezer Zambrano struck out. San Jose also threatened in the seventh against Rancho Cucamonga reliever Juan Noriega as Cavan led off with a single and Villalona was hit by a pitch with two outs, however Myles Schroder struck out to end the frame. Noriega and Craig Stem combined to retire the last seven Giants batters of the contest.
