Travs Open Trip with 4-2 Win

Springdale, Arkansas - The Arkansas Travelers opened their longest road trip of the 2013 season with a 4-2 victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Saturday night at Arvest Ballpark. the Travs scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie score. Right hander Brandon Hynick (1-2) earned his first win by spinning six effective innings and Kevin Johnson took over the Texas League lead in saves (6) with a perfect ninth inning.
The Travs even their record at 14-14 with their sixth win in their last nine games. The Naturals drop to a league-worst 9-18 which includes losses in five of eight games.
Hynick brought a 9.00 ERA after his first two starts but held the Naturals to one run over six innings. He mostly pitched around seven base hits and allowed his only run on a solo home run hit by Naturals 1B Matt Fields. Hynick struck out six batters and walked just one.
Mike Piazza struck out the side in one scoreless inning, his first relief outing in over two weeks. Right hander Josh Judy allowed a run in one inning during his Travs debut working the eighth inning.
Tulsa righty Jason Adam (0-3) suffered the loss, although he was fairly effective holding the Travs to five hits and one earned run in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked just two, but Adam also committed a throwing error and threw a run-scoring wild pitch during the fifth inning.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the fifth Travis Witherspoon hit a hard single to left field. Adam then deflected Jett Bandy's comebacker behind his back for a single. With Rolando Gomez batting Adam attempted a pickoff at second base but threw wildly allowing both runners to advance. Then he threw a wild pitch on ball four to Gomez to the backstop bringing Witherspoon home for the go-ahead run. Bandy advanced to third on the walk and scored when Matt Long's fly ball to shallow center was dropped by LF Roman Hernandez. Gomez scored the third run of the inning on a throwing error by 2B Angel Franco on a pivot attempting a double play on a C.J. Cron ground ball.
The Travs were held in check without a base hit for the remaining four innings. Hynick departed after the sixth inning. Piazza got through the seventh inning with one hit and a walk but three strikeouts.
Josh Judy allowed a run on a wild pitch in his Travs debut before Johnson calmly closed the door on the Naturals in the ninth inning.
