Bats Give up Four Run Lead, Come Back to Win 6-5

May 4, 2013 - International League (IL) Louisville Bats

BUFFALO, Ny - Emmanuel Burriss and Henry Rodriguez combined for two hits and five RBI's to fuel the Louisville Bats (14-15) past the Buffalo Bisons (18-9) in a 6-5 win Saturday afternoon. Rodriguez hit a three run homerun in the top of the fourth and Burriss hit a two run single in the top of the eighth.

Louisville got things started in the third inning, jumping all over Buffalo starter Miguel Batista. Kristopher Negron walked and stole second, then scored on a Nevin Ashley single. Billy Hamilton singled, only his fourth hit in 33 at-bats, and scored along with Ashley when Rodriguez hit his first homerun of the season to give the Bats a 4-0 lead.

Bats starter Pedro Villarreal entered the game with three quality starts in four this season, but still seeking his first win. After a solid three innings, the wheels came off in the fourth. Buffalo collected five hits in a row, three doubles and two singles, including a Jim Negrych two run double that pulled Buffalo within one run. Negrych, who is batting .416 after today, was 3-for-5 with two RBI's.

Villarreal returned to pitch the fifth and gave up a leadoff homerun to Ryan Langerhans who was in the game as a replacement for Moises Sierra, the Buffalo right fielder who was ejected in the first inning. Villarreal exited the game after the fifth, giving up nine hits and four runs while striking out seven. Sierra was apparently hit by a pitch but home plate umpire David Soucy called a foul ball. Sierra slammed his helmet to the ground and was immediately tossed.

Clay Henlsey worked a perfect sixth for Louisville but gave up a run and two hits in the seventh as Buffalo collected their fifth unanswered run, taking the lead 5-4. The Bats have struggled this year when falling behind late in games but they rallied in the eighth thanks in part to a Bison error.

Felix Perez hit a grounder to shortstop Andy LaRoche who bobbled it, allowing Perez to reach with one out in the inning. Denis Phipps followed with a single and Josh Fellhauer walked, loading the bases. Emmanuel Burriss hit a single off the mound and into center, scoring Perez and Phipps to give Louisville the eventual game winning 6-5 lead.

Buffalo squandered a great chance in the eighth after collecting back-to-back walks with one out. The hottest hitter in the IL, Jim Negrych, grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Jose Arredondo (S, 2) pitched the final two innings for Louisville.

The loss goes to Clint Everts (L, 0-2) who gave up the two run single to Burriss after coming in for Batista. Batista finished the game with six innings, four hits and four runs while walking four and striking out one. Louisville winner Nick Christiani (W, 2-2) only faced two batters in the seventh, relieving Hensley who gave up the lead to Buffalo earlier in the inning.

The win gives Louisville a 2-1 lead in the series as the teams get ready for the finale tomorrow. First pitch is at 1:05 with Daniel Corcino (1-4, 7.65) on the mound for the Bats.
