Big Night for Fontana Mired by Miscue

May 4, 2013 - California League (CalL1) - Lancaster JetHawks News Release

ADELANTO, Calif. - Nolan Fontana went 4-for-5 with a home run but an error in the fourth inning led to six unearned runs and the High Desert Mavericks went on to beat the JetHawks, 9-7, on Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Fontana began his night with a single in the first inning and came around to score on an Andrew Aplin double. Aplin would later score on an error by Mavs starter David Colvin. Lancaster totaled two unearned runs on the inning and led, 3-0.

Brandon Meredith tripled to start the third inning and scored on a M.P. Cokinos fly ball to put the Lancaster up by four.

Shortstop Chris Taylor got High Desert on the board in the third inning with a solo home run against JetHawks starter Tyson Perez.

With a runner at second base and one out in the bottom of the fourth, Nate Melendres hit a ground ball that took a tough hop on Fontana and was ruled an error. The Mavericks would go on to hit two home runs and score six runs on the inning.

Ji-Man Choi hit a three-run home run to put the Mavs ahead and Kevin Rivers later hit a two-run shot to end Perez's night. All six runs scored in the inning were unearned.

Perez finished his night allowing seven runs (one earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Lancaster added two runs in the fifth inning to get back within one. Fontana and Aplin started the inning with singles and came in to score on Matt Duffy and Preston Tucker RBI-ground balls.

Fontana tied the game against Seon Gi Kim (2-1) with a leadoff home run in the seventh inning. It was Fontana's fourth hit of the game and his third home run of the season.

High Desert came right back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh against piggy-back starter David Rollins (2-3). With two outs and nobody on, Rollins issued a walk and gave up a single before Dillon Hazlett doubled in both runners.

Rollins allowed two runs in three innings of work and was tabbed with his third loss of the season.

M.P. Cokinos led off the ninth with a ground out to finish an 0-for-3 night, ending his hitting streak at 10 games. Fontana finished his night with four hits and three runs scored.

The JetHawks (16-11) take on High Desert in game two of the series on Saturday night at 6:05 pm at Mavericks Stadium. Tommy Shirley will make his first start of the season and will be piggy-backed by Luis Cruz.
