Eighth-Inning Rally Dooms Giants in 6-3 Loss

May 4, 2013 - California League (CalL1) - San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored three eighth-inning runs en route to a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd of 4,604 fans at Municipal Stadium. In the opener of a four-game series, San Jose rallied to tie the game with a two-run bottom of the sixth before the Quakes took the lead for good in the eighth inning.

Ryan Cavan (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) extended his hitting streak to 13 games for the Giants in the loss. No San Jose player finished the contest with more than one hit.

The Giants trailed by a 3-1 margin when Shawn Payne began the sixth-inning rally by reaching on an error. Payne then stole second and scored on Cavan's one-out double off the wall in right center. Devin Harris followed by grounding out before Mac Williamson grounded a single up the middle to plate Cavan with the tying run. Williamson advanced to third on the hit when Quakes center fielder Rob Garvey misplayed the ball for an error, however the next batter, Angel Villalona, struck out swinging to end the inning.

San Jose appeared poised to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh as singles from Jeff Arnold and Bobby Haney put runners on the corners with one out, but Payne followed by grounding into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.

In the top of the eighth, Angelo Songco led off for Rancho Cucamonga with a single. After Jonathan Garcia struck out, Giants reliever Bryce Bandilla issued a walk to Pratt Maynard. Scott Schebler then stepped to the plate and lined a single into right center field to score Songco with the go-ahead run. Ryan Mount followed with a double to deep right center plating two more for a 6-3 Quakes advantage.

San Jose's only baserunners in the final two frames were Cavan reaching on an error with one out in the bottom of the eighth and Arnold drawing a one-out walk in the ninth.

Freddie Cabrera (2-0) picked-up the win out of the Rancho Cucamonga bullpen after tossing a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. Michael Thomas pitched the ninth for his league-leading ninth save of the year.

Bandilla (1-3) was saddled with his second loss of the homestand for the Giants. The left-hander was charged with all three runs in the eighth inning. Bandilla worked 1 1/3 innings during his stint on the mound with three runs (all earned) and three hits allowed.

San Jose initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Chris Lofton singled with one out, stole second and scored when Harris reached on a two-out error.

Chris Marlowe started on the mound for the Giants and began his outing with three scoreless innings. The Quakes though broke through with a pair of runs against Marlowe in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. O'Koyea Dickson led off with a double into right field corner before Songco reached on catcher's interference. After Marlowe retired the next two hitters, Schebler ripped a triple down the right field line to score both Dickson and Songco.

Marlowe worked five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. He walked one and struck out four.

Garcia extended the Rancho Cucamonga lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth with a solo home run off relief pitcher Kelvin Marte.
