Topes Clipped by Redbirds in Finale

The Isotopes (15-12) three-game winning streak was snapped in an 8-4 defeat to the Memphis Redbirds 14-12 in the final game of the series. SS Dee Gordon swiped his 13th base of the season in the first inning of the loss and drew a team-high four walks, the most in a single game this season. Gordon's 13 stolen bases lead the Pacific Coast League.
Memphis, looking to avoid a four-game sweep, put two runs the board on five consecutive hits before recording an out. RF Adron Chambers started the hit parade with a single and he was followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from 2B Kolten Wong and CF Oscar Taveras. The Redbirds tacked on one more first-inning run on a C Rob Johnson sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.
After three scoreless innings put up by both starting pitchers, the Redbirds pushed across three runs in the fifth. White's two walks in the inning to 1B Brock Peterson and SS Greg Garcia both scored in the frame coming back to haunt him. Catcher Rob Johnson and LF Justin Christian each had an RBI single bringing the pair in plus 3B Ryan Jackson who reached on a single.
Albuquerque made some noise in the fifth inning. 1B Scott Van Slyke (1-for-4) hit his eighth double of the season to put a runner in scoring position with one out. 3B Rusty Ryal (3-for-5) brought Van Slyke in on an RBI single two batters later to slim the Topes deficit to 6-1.St. Louis Cardinal's top prospect CF Oscar Taveras put the game further out of reach of the Topes with a 2-run homer in the sixth. The home run was Taveras' third of the season and it brought Wong home who reached on a single.
The Topes inched a run closer in the sixth. Gordon reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Geison Aguasviva. RF Matt Angle (1-for-3) then singled to left field scoring Gordon and cutting the Memphis lead to 8-2.
Albuquerque pushed runs across for the third straight inning scoring two in the seventh. 2B Ozzie Martinez collected both RBI of the inning scoring Ryal and Tony Gwynn Jr. on his first double of the season. His two-run double sliced the Redbirds lead in half 8-4 but the Topes would get no closer.
After the three Memphis runs in the first, both pitchers locked in over the next three innings putting up zeros. The sixth inning proved problematic for White (1-3, 5.18) as he allowed three addition runs before exiting. He went 4.2 inning suffering the loss giving up a total of six runs, all earned, on 10 hits. He walked three and struck out five. RHP Maikel Cleto went three scoreless innings striking out four.
RHP Geison Aguasviva and RHP Sean Patterson combined for 4.1 innings of bullpen work. Patterson did not allow a run or hit in his two innings and Aguasviva allowed two runs on five hits.Redbirds southpaw Nick Greenwood (1-1, 5.25) earned the win tossing three innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. He also walked two and struck out one.
The New Orleans Zephyrs come to town for the first time this season to play a four-game set beginning tomorrow, Friday May 3. It is the first of 15 games that the two sides will play in 2013. Topes righty Matt Palmer (0-0, 4.50) is schedule to open the series and New Orleans RHP Jacob Turner (1-3, 6.56). Catch all of the game action on 610 "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
