Alcantara Sharp in Snappers 6-1 Triumph
April 29, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Raul Alcantara fired six-and-a-third innings of one run ball for the Beloit Snappers to lead them past the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-1 on Monday evening in Midwest League action at Pohlman Field with 254 on hand.
The Snappers snap a three game skid with the victory and move to 10-11. West Michigan's record now stands at 10-12
Alcantara (3-1) was masterful for much of the evening. He began by retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, striking out seven of them. He would total eight K's on the night without issuing a single walk.
The righty also benefitted from some spectacular defense by shortstop Daniel Robertson. Robertson turned the fifth inning into his own personal highlight reel. He began the frame by ranging far into foul territory to grab a popout for the first out. After a single, the next batter hit a grounder deep into the hole on the left side. Robertson back-handed the ball and made a Derek Jeter-esque jump throw to first just in time to get the runner. He finished the frame by fielding a routine grounder and throwing the batter out. Robertson wasn't done, however. In the sixth, with a man on second, Robertson fielded an infield single behind second base. He then pivoted and threw a strike to third to get the runner who had over-run the bag.
The Snappers offense used it's power stroke to move into the lead, beginning in the second inning when Matt Olson squared one up and hit it out for his second solo homer of the year and his second in the two days. John Wooten (1-3, HR, RBI, 2 runs) duplicated the feat in the fifth, hitting a solo shot to center off Yorfrank Lopez (2-1). In the sixth, Robertson, keen on doing it all on this night, upped the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single.
In the seventh, Alcantara began to show signs of fatigue. The first two batters of the inning singled and, after a strikeout, the next two were plunked, forcing in a run and pulling the Whitecaps to within 3-1. Ryan Dull was then summoned from the Beloit bullpen and put an end to the rally by striking out Austin Schotts and getting David Gonzalez to ground out.
West Michigan had cut into the lead, but they gave that run right back and then some in the seventh. After the first two batters of the frame drew walks, a throwing error on a bunt attempt brought in the Snappers fourth run. Then, when trying to intentionally walk the next batter, pitcher Edgar De La Rosa uncorked a wild pitch bring in another run. A sacrifice fly by Robertson later in the inning closed out the scoring.
After taking over on the mound in the seventh, Dull stayed in the game and ended up closing out the game by retiring all eight batters he faced, earning his third save.
The finale of this six game homestand will be on Tuesday morning as Beloit and West Michigan conclude their series with a game starting at 11:00am. The Snappers will hand the ball to RHP Michael Ynoa (0-0, 0.82 ERA), while the Whitecaps will counter with RHP Montreal Robinson (1-2, 4.35 ERA).
