Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Eight seemed to be the magic number on Monday night as the Kernels won their 8th straight ballgame by an 8-run margin behind an 8 strikeout performance by 18-year old Jose Berrios. The 9-1 victory over Lansing was propelled by a 5-run 5th inning.
Jose Berrios (2-0) fanned 8 Lugnuts over 6.2 innings as he allowed only 1 run on 4 hits while walking none. Josh Burris was stellar in his Kernels debut, going the final 2.1 innings and allowing 0 runs on 1 hit while striking out 3 and walking 1.
Both teams were held hitless the first time through the order by the starting pitchers - Berrios for the Kernels and Taylor Cole for the Lugnuts. The Kernels struck for a pair of runs in the 3rd inning. A pair of two-out errors and a walk set up a 2-RBI triple for Jorge Polanco to put Cedar Rapids up 2-0. Lansing picked up their first two hits in the 4th inning with a triple and a RBI double by Christian Lopes.
The Kernels took a 7-1 lead by plating five runs with two outs in the 5th inning while hitting for the cycle in order as a team. After a walk and a two-out single by Jorge Polanco, Dalton Hicks drove in a couple with a 2-RBI double off the wall in left. Adam Brett Walker followed with a RBI triple to the gap in right-center. Travis Harrison finished off the team-cycle with a 2-run home run. Harrison's blast was his 3rd of the season and cleared the pavilion in left.
Cedar Rapids extended their lead to 9-1 in the 6th inning when Byron Buxton's RBI triple to dead-center brought J.D. Williams home. Jorge Polanco followed with a RBI single to score Buxton.
Taylor Cole (1-2) took the loss for Lansing, going 5 innings and allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 6 hits.
