Garcia Pitches Tides past Toledo
April 28, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Freddy Garcia worked eight strong innings and Norfolk got big hits from Jonathan Schoop and Russ Canzler in a 4-3 victory over the Toledo Mud Hens Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Garcia (4-0) needed just 88 pitches to navigate his outing as the Tides moved a season-high six games over the .500 mark with the win. The 36-year-old allowed three runs - two earned - on six hits to become the first pitcher in the International League to pick up his fourth victory.
Garcia struck out five without walking a batter, and he's now posted a 2.67 ERA in five starts with the Tides. The veteran right-hander has walked just two batters in 33.2 innings this season, with none of those walks coming over his last three starts.
The Tides got on the board in the second inning, as Schoop lined a two-run double into the left-center field gap off of Hens starter Jose Alvarez (1-2). The double extended Schoop's hitting streak to 10 games, the longest by a Tides player this season.
Norfolk extended its lead to 4-0 an inning later on a two-run home run by Canzler, his fourth long ball of the year.
Danny Dorn and John Lindsey both hit solo home runs for Toledo, and Argenis Diaz added an RBI single in the seventh inning.
Jairo Asencio worked a perfect ninth inning to register his eighth save. He's now a perfect 8-for-8 in save opportunities and has a 0.90 ERA in 10 outings.
The two clubs will continue their four-game series Monday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 6:35. Steve Johnson (0-1, 7.20) will make his second start for the Tides against right-hander Shawn Hill (0-2, 3.24)
