Rochester Red Wings News Release

Buffalo Bisons (15-6) @ Rochester Red Wings (9-14)

Frontier Field - Rochester, N.Y. - 1:05 p.m.

RHP Edgar Gonzalez (0-0, 7.71) vs. RHP Liam Hendriks (0-1, 4.63)

TODAY'S GAME: The surging Red Wings, riding a current league-high 4-game winning streak, host the first-place Buffalo Bisons in game 2 of their 4-game set on Sunday afternoon (1:05 p.m.) at Frontier Field. After beginning the season 2-11 - the worst start for a Red Wings team since at least 1940 - Rochester has rebounded to win 7 of their last 10 games. Still, they haven't been able to gain much ground as the Bisons have won 11 of their last 13 games and sit 2.0 games clear of Pawtucket atop the IL North. After the 4-game series, the Wings will hit the road for an 8-game trip in Columbus (May 2-5) and Toledo (May 6-9).

MORE ABOUT YESTERDAY:

-The Wings shutout an opponent for the 2nd time this season... It was the first time they blanked an opponent by a 1-0 score since July 8, 2012 vs LHV... The last time the Wings beat the Bisons 1-0 was back on July 3, 2010 in Buffalo.

-Red Wings pitching allowed just 4 base runners and faced just 2 over the minimum... No Bisons baserunner reached second base on the day.

-The Wings are now 4-4 in one run games and 7-6 in contests decided by 3 runs or less this season.

ROUNDING INTO FORM: The Red Wings starting rotation appears to be rounding into form. Since April 21, a span of 8 games, the Wings starting rotation is 3-1 with a 2.85 ERA (15 ER/47.1 IP). The starting rotation's season ERA has dipped from 4.76 on 4/21 to 3.99 entering play Sunday... P.J. Walters and Kyle Gibson have led the way going a combined 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA (4 ER/25.1 IP) and only 10 hits allowed in their last 4 starts combined.

GIBSON'S OUTING: Former Twins top prospect, Kyle Gibson, has shown glimpses of all that potential this season in his first full year since Tommy John surgery in September of 2011. The 6.2 scoreless innings he threw on Saturday was the most scoreless innings he's tossed in one game since May 15, 2010 (7.1 IP @ HAR). Gibson has allowed one or fewer runs in 3 of his 5 starts this season and in his start on 4/21 all 3 runs that were charged to him were scored after he had left the game... After allowing a run in the first inning on 4/16 he rattled off 10.0 scoreless innings - the 2nd longest scoreless streak by a Red Wings pitcher this season behind Walters' 13.0-inning streak.

UNLUCKY NUMBER 6?: Catcher Chris Herrmann became the 5th Red Wings player this season that was unable to extend his hitting streak passed 5 games as he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Saturday. Herrmann joined Doug Bernier, Evan Bigley, Eric Farris and Chris Colabello with a tied for team high 5-game hit streak.

-Herrmann hit .375 (9-for-24) with 2 doubles, 5 runs scored and 6 RBI over his streak

10-WIN APRIL?: The Red Wings are just one win away from their first 10-win April since 2008 -- it would be quite an accomplishment considering they were 2-11 on April 17. After winning 10-plus games in April for 7 straight years (2002-08), Rochester hasn't reached the 10-win mark in the last four seasons going a combined 34-51 in the first month of the season. Since 1980, the most April wins for the Wings was 17 in 1997 -- they started that season 0-3 and ended as Governors' Cup champions.

HE'S DUE: Today's Red Wings starter Liam Hendriks is due for a "quality start." In his first 4 starts of the season (2 w/ MIN & 2 w/ ROC) he has yet to go 6 innings and allow 3 or fewer earned runs... It is tied for the longest such stretch since the start of the 2010 season for him... In fact, until his previous 2 outings, he hadn't gone 2 straight starts in the minor leagues without a "quality start" since 8/6-8/11/11 with Rochester... The last time he went 3 straight starts in the minors without a quality start was 6/26-9/1/10 with Fort Myers (4 in a row)...

-Entering this season, 39 of Hendriks' 58 minor league starts (67%) since 2010 have been "quality starts"; however only 6 of his 20 Major League starts have been "quality"... Last season with Rochester he recorded 12 "quality starts" in 16 GS

COMING UP BIG: Red Wings outfielder Evan Bigley recorded the only multi-hit game for the Wings yesterday going 2-for-3 with a double and the lone run scored... In 10 games with Rochester since his April 17 promotion from Double-A, Bigley is hitting .345 (10-for-29) with a .486 on-base percentage... The Wings are 6-3 in games Bigley has started.
