Nady's Five Hit, Four RBI Night Leads 13-Run Outburst

Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Omaha, NEB. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (14-8) set new season highs in runs scored and total hits as they throttled the Iowa Cubs (7-14) in a 13-2 win on 21 hits, led by the first five-hit game of the season for the Chasers by first baseman Xavier Nady. It was the first double-digit win for Omaha in 2013, and the most runs scored by the Chasers at Werner Park in the history of the rivalry with Iowa.

The Chasers started the day with a bang as they plated six runs in the first inning, the most runs they have scored in the opening frame this season, as the first six batters of the game for Omaha reached base. The Storm Chasers followed up the big first inning by scoring at least one run in six of the next seven innings. Every Omaha batter had at least one hit on the night, the first time this season Omaha has accomplished that feat, with six batters collecting multi-hit games and four scoring multiple runs.

Nady's five-hit night included a solo homer in the fourth inning, tying him with catcher Brett Hayes for the team lead at four, and was the first of three long balls by the Chasers in the win. The veteran first baseman had three extra-base hits, a part of ten for Omaha in the win which is the most in a game by the Chasers since they totaled eleven at Colorado Springs on May 14, 2011. Nady raised his batting average from .279 entering the game to .324, and his five hits were the most he has had in a game as far back as 2005 (game-by-game records unavailable prior to 2005).

The Omaha pitching staff did not need the season highs in runs and hits as they limited the I-Cubs to only two runs on five hits, tying a season low for hits allowed. Storm Chasers starter Brian Sanches let in only two runs in his six innings of work, the longest start this season for the veteran righty. Sanches had just eight starts in the last nine years before this season, but has allowed two runs or less in three of his four starts for Omaha in 2013. Relievers Blaine Boyer and George Sherrill combined for three shutout innings to finish off Iowa and seal at least a split in the series. Boyer is the only Omaha pitcher yet to allow an earned run and has gave up only two hits in last six innings.

Omaha will look to win their first ever series against Iowa at Werner Park tomorrow, as the two clubs have split the first four series since the stadium opened in 2011. They will also be looking for their fifth straight series win, which Omaha has not done since late in the 2005 season. The Storm Chasers will send out left-hander Ryan Verdugo (1-1, 3.79) against fellow southpaw Brooks Raley (2-2, 3.22) in the series finale tomorrow at 2:05 p.m.
