Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Moosic, PA - Matt Carson's home run in the eighth inning lifted the Columbus Clippers (Triple-A/Cleveland Indians) to a 3-2 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Yankees) on Friday evening. The Clippers took three of four games from the RailRiders at PNC Field, as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre drops to 9-11 on the season.

Columbus scored the first run of the ballgame off of RailRider starter Brett Marshall in the third. With one out, Matt Lawson singled, and then advanced to second when Jeremy Hermida followed with a walk. Yan Gomes then smacked a double to left field, plating Lawson.

Columbus starter T.J. House retired the first 11 batters of the game, but ran into trouble in the fifth. With two outs, Cody Johnson reached on an infield single. Addison Maruszak followed with a double that drove Johnson home from first, tying the game at one.

The Clippers went back in front with a run in the top of the sixth. Carson led off with a walk, and two outs later, came around to score when Ryan Rohlinger hit a ball off the glove of right fielder Zoilo Almonte. The play was ruled an error, and it gave Columbus the 2-1 lead.

That advantage was short lived, but the sixth inning ended on controversial circumstances. Melky Mesa led off with a single to center field, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Dan Johnson then walked, and after a strikeout, Luke Murton doubled down the left field line, scoring Mesa and moving Johnson to third. Cody Johnson then blooped a ball to center field, and Tim Fedroff's diving attempt was initially ruled a trap, which would've allowed two runs to score. However, the umpires convened at second base, and the play was ruled a catch which ended the inning. RailRider manager Dave Miley was ejected following the inning for arguing the change.

Carson's go-ahead home run in the eighth just went over the outstretched glove of Mesa and into the left field bullpen. Carson played for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2008.

Jim Miller (0-2) picked up the loss after allowing the Carson homer. He struck out six batters in two innings, with the round tripper as his only blemish. Marshall ended up pitching five and one-third innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, and struck out a season-high seven batters.

Fernando Nieve (1-1) tossed three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. House worked six innings, and conceded just two runs.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre now heads to Charlotte, N.C. for a four-game series with the Knights. Vidal Nuno (2-0, 1.54) will start for the first time since being named International League Pitcher of the Week.First pitch in Charlotte is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
