Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

Asheville, N.C. - The Asheville Tourists (13-9) tagged the Lakewood BlueClaws (7-15) for four runs in the first inning and held off the multiple offensive surges in the 14-10 win, Friday night at McCormick Field. The BlueClaws pitching staff gave up 21 hits, nine doubles, both of which are new franchise records for opponents batting against Lakewood

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, the Tourists picked up a single and two doubles to take a 1-0 lead. The inning continued with a Matt Argyropoulos double that plated two more runs. An RBI groundout off the bat of Julian Yan plated the final run of the frame and made it 4-0.

Josh Warner took the hill and made his fifth start of the season and continued to falter in the second. Again, after retiring the leadoff man, Warner (1-2) gave up back-to-back doubles to put two on. Derek Jones picked up an RBI on a groundout to second and Francisco Sosa followed with an RBI single to make it 6-1 after two.

The Aussie righty lasted just the two innings before he handed the ball over to Nicholas Hanson. The new pitcher allowed the first six men to reach, two of which scored, in the third inning. He got out of the inning without any further damage done and preserved an 8-2 deficit, courtesy of a 3-6-1, inning ending, double play.

The BlueClaws jumped on the board in the second on an RBI single from Alejandro Villalobos. In the third, it was Art Charles scoring the second run of the game on a wild pitch from T.J. Oakes.

In the fourth, two runs scored and cut the deficit to 8-4. Willie Carmona reached and scored on an RBI double from Chad Carman for the first run, and Carman was pushed home two hitters later on a ground out from Villalobos.

With the score at 9-4, the BlueClaws continued to crawl back into the game in the fifth. With one out, Mitch Walding hit a two-run triple and Carmona followed with a single the scored Walding and pulled the 'Claws within two at 9-7.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Tourists re-upped its lead to four with two runs on two hits and a walk. In the seventh the lead increased to seven with another three plated, which made it 14-7.

The BlueClaws didn't go quietly and again attempted to mount a comeback in the eighth. With one out, Zach Taylor doubled and scored on a Villalobos singled. Two batters later, Larry Greene, Jr. picked up a two run double to pull Lakewood within four at 14-10. That would be all that Lakewood could muster, as they were held scoreless in the ninth.

The Asheville starter, Oakes (3-1), went the requisite five innings to get in line for the win. He gave up seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits; he walked one and struck out four.
