Loons, Silver Hawks Split Twin Bill

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Great Lakes Loons and South Bend Silver Hawks split a doubleheader Wednesday night, with the Loons winning the first game, 13-7 in seven innings, and the Silver Hawks capturing the nightcap, 2-1 in eight innings.

In the first game, the Loons trailed 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning, when Malcolm Holland singled up the middle with the bases loaded, two outs and two strikes to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs. Tyler Ogle followed two pitches later with a three-run home run to deep left, his third homer of the year.

Miguel Sulbaran (2-0) entered in relief to throw four innings, striking out seven and throwing 31 of his 40 pitches for strikes (unofficial count) to notch his second win.

Every Loons position player reached base at least once with eight reaching twice. Eight of the starting nine had at least one hit. Loons hitters drew 13 walks and were hit by three pitches by the control-deficient Silver Hawks. Ogle reached base in all five plate appearances with a homer, two walks and two hit batsmen.

The second game was a classic pitcher's duel. The Silver Hawks struck against Loons starter Lyndsey Caughel with one out in the second inning on a two-run home run Alex Glenn. It was the first run allowed by Caughel all year, and the only one he surrendered in five innings.

The Loons tied the score in the top of the seventh, with some help from South Bend's defense. With runners at first and second and one out, Casio Grider grounded to the shortstop Kevin Medrano, who errantly threw to second base, allowing an unearned run to score and tagging closer R.J. Hiveley with a blown save.

With the score still tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Silver Hawks loaded the bases against Loons closer Scott Griggs with three walks, including two to the first two batters of the inning. Griggs (0-1) then threw a wild pitch over the head of catcher Dashenko Ricardo to bring home the winning run.

The Loons continue their nine-game road trip Thursday with their second stop - Cedar Rapids, IA - for a matchup with the Western Division-leading Kernels, newly affiliated with the Minnesota Twins. Right-hander Angel Sanchez (1-1, 3.94), the Loons' opening day starter, aims to extend his streak of consecutive quality starts to three. He'll be opposed by Kernels' lefty Brett Lee (2-0, 0.00), who has not surrendered a run in eight innings in 2013. The game is scheduled to start at 7:35 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com
