Late Runs Prove Costly in Smokies 5-4 Loss Wednesday

KODAK, Tenn. - For the second consecutive game, the Tennessee Smokies (11-9) and the Montgomery Biscuits (11-9) played a back-and-forth game, but late-inning runs by the Biscuits proved to be too much for the Smokies as Tennessee dropped the series finale 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at Smokies Park.

Montgomery got on the board first in the third inning off Smokies starter Matt Loosen, when Todd Glaesmann double, scoring Mikie Mahtook from second. The Biscuits would add another run in the fifth inning on a Cameron Seitzer single to center field, scoring Robby Price.

Loosen, making his second start of the season for the Smokies and his first start at Smokies Park, went 4.2 innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs. He walked four batters while striking out three.

In the Smokies' fifth inning, and Elliot Soto on first, Matt Szczur walked to put runners on first and second. Ronald Torreyes singled on a line drive to left field, scoring Soto. The next batter and the newest Smoky, Ty Wright, doubled to center field, scoring Szczur and Torreyes, making the score 3-2.

Mayo Acosta tied the ballgame on a solo home run in the sixth inning off reliever Marcus Hatley. Following the inning, the game was put in a rain delay for an hour and eight minutes

Following the rain delay, the Biscuits added two runs in the top of the ninth inning off reliever Tony Zych (0-2). They both came on a fielders' choice by Mahtook, scoring Shawn O'Malley. Following the play, a throwing error by Lopez, scoring Kiermaier giving the Biscuits a 5-3 lead.

With the top of the order coming up for the Smokies in the bottom of the ninth inning, Szczur singled on a seeing-eye single in between the shortstop and third baseman to lead off the inning. Szczur then stole second base, his eighth steal of the season. Torreyes grounded out, advancing Szczur to third. Arismendy Alcantara singled, scoring Szczur. With the score 5-4, Montgomery reliever Juan Sandoval picked up his fourth save of the season striking out Jae-Hoon Ha to end the ballgame.

The Smokies will continue their 10-game homestand with a five-game series with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos starting Thursday. The Smokies will send righty Dallas Beeler (1-2, 4.07) to the mound and will face Pensacola lefty Ryan Dennick (1-0, 2.65).
