Sioux City Explorers News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA. - The Sioux City Explorers have announced the signing of three relief pitchers to 2013 contracts. Cody Satterwhite, Daniel Carela and Yunier Colon will all report to camp on May 4th, when the X's begin their 21st season in Siouxland. With their signings, Sioux City currently has eleven pitchers and ten position players under contract.

Satterwhite, a Jackson, MS native, was a 2nd round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of Mississippi. He spent three seasons in the Tigers organization before suffering an arm injury that sidelined him for the 2012 season. His best year came in 2009 when he spent the season with the Tigers double-A affiliate, the Erie Seawolves. That year he posted a 3.47 earned run average, allowing 19 earned runs in 49.1 innings pitched, while striking out 52 batters and collecting 12 saves. In his three seasons of professional baseball, the 6'4" right-hander has accumulated a 3.60 earned run average over 62 appearances, while striking out 86 batters in 80 innings pitched.

A product of New York, NY, the 2013 season will mark Carela's 5th year of professional baseball. Signed as a free agent in 2009 by the New York Mets, the 6'3" right-hander has spent time in the Mets and Dodgers farm systems, making it to high-A ball. Last year, Carela started the season with the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League, where he appeared in 36 games, posting a 2-2 record. The hard-throwing reliever pitched 36 innings, striking out 41 batters and posting a 3.00 earned run average before having his contract purchased by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Over his career, Carela has compiled a 7-7 record with a 4.11 earned run average in 97 appearances, striking out 123 batters in 118.1 innings pitched.

Born in Guantanamo, Cuba, Colon has played one year of professional baseball in the States. In 2012, the 6'1" right-hander spent the season with the McAllen Thunder of the North American League. In 20 appearances with the Thunder, Colon posted a 2-2 record in 33 innings pitched, tallying 15 strikeouts and compiling a 3.27 earned run average. Prior to the 2012 season, he played a number of years in the Cuban National League.
