Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, N.C. - The Durham Bulls won both games of their doubleheader Saturday, 10-4 and 5-3 in front of 9,249 fans, the largest crowd of the season at the DBAP. The Bulls are now 8-1 at home this season, and they sit atop the IL South Division with a three game cushion over Norfolk.

The Bulls jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning of the Game 1, as Jason Bourgeois led off with a single, then Hak-Ju Lee advanced both runners into scoring position on an error by the left fielder and former Bull Russ Canzler. Brandon Guyer and Leslie Anderson both followed with RBI groundouts for a 2-0 Durham lead. Tim Beckham laced an RBI triple into the gap which scored Mike Fontenot in the second frame, then was plated on a Rich Thompson RBI groundout, boosting the Bulls lead to 4-0.

Chris Archer (W, 3-0) departed after 5.0 innings of three-run baseball after surrendering two earned runs (three runs total) on seven hits. The right-hander struck out a season-low four batters while he yielded three walks en route to his third victory of 2013.

Durham's crushing blow was a four-spot in the fifth highlighted by Anderson's two-run home run, his fourth of the year, and Fontenot's two-run double down the left field line as the Bulls amped their lead to 10-3. Fontenot finished his evening 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. RHP Steve Geltz concluded the first game in style as the reliever struck out five of the six batters he faced for his 2.0 frames of one-run baseball. Geltz allowed one run on three hits.

In Game 2, Durham crossed the plate early once again as Bourgeois scored on a Wil Myers double-play grounder.

Myers added his second RBI of the game when he tattooed his first home run with the Bulls to dead centerfield in the fourth inning. Durham added another run in the frame when Vince Belnome crushed a double off the Blue Montser and was driven home on Beckham's RBI double for a 3-0 Bulls lead.

The lead wouldn't last long however, as LHP starter Alex Torres walked the bases loaded with nobody out in the fifth. Following a would-be double play off Torres' glove, Jonathan Schoop followed with the Tides first hit of the night, a two-out two-run single that tied the game, 3-3. Torres walked away with the no decision after he surrendered three runs on one hit, while he struck out eight

The play of the day occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs, when Belnome blasted a two-run home run to score Myers and give the Bulls a 5-3 lead heading to the final frame. Belnome concluded his impressive day between the two games 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI.

RHP Kirby Yates (W, 2-1) impressed when he struck out the side in the sixth. Josh Lueke (S, 4) entered the game in the seventh vying for his fourth save in five opportunities. The right-hander struck out two after allowing a leadoff triple, en route to his fourth save of the season.

The Bulls will go for a three-game series sweep of Norfolk on Sunday evening at the DBAP. Durham RHP Alex Colome (1-1, 0.56 ERA) will face TBA (0-0, 0.00) for the third time already this season, with Durham winning both prior contests. First pitch on Sunday is slated for 5:05 p.m.
