Gwinnett Stripers News Release

FORT MILL, SC - In a night headlined by the start of Atlanta Braves' first baseman Freddie Freeman's minor league rehab stint, right-hander Omar Poveda stole the show. Poveda dominated with 7.0 scoreless innings on Friday night, leading the Gwinnett Braves (7-9) to an 8-0 win over the Charlotte Knights (5-11) at Knights Stadium.

Poveda (W, 1-0) turned in his second quality start of the year, surrendering only two hits and a walk while striking out four. Left-hander Yohan Flande worked a scoreless eighth inning with one hit, and right-hander Andrew Russell completed Gwinnett's first shutout win of the year with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.

While Poveda and the 'pen were in command, the G-Braves' lineup provided plenty of offense by scoring eight runs over a four-inning span. In the top of the third, Jose Constanza led off with a single off of Charlotte starter, right-hander Jason Berken. Corey Wimberly followed with a bunt single to put two on with no outs. After a Berken strikeout, Ernesto Mejia lined a single down the left field line scoring Constanza from second for a 1-0 lead. The hit raised Mejia's International League-leading RBI total to 18.

Gwinnett added two more in the top of the fourth as Matt Pagnozzi pounded a two-out double to left off of Berken and scored from second on a single by Constanza. The lead grew to 3-0 as Wimberly blooped a double to shallow right, scoring Constanza from third.

The biggest inning of the night came in the top of the fifth, as Joe Terdoslavich hit a towering two-run home to right, scoring himself and Mejia. Terdoslavich's third homer of the year raised the G-Braves' lead to 5-0. Paul Janish then singled, moved to second on a Berken wild pitch and scored on a double to deep center by Joe Leonard.

The G-Braves scored twice more in the top of the seventh against former Atlanta infielder, Knights' reliever Tony Pena, Jr. Wimberly reached on a leadoff single and Freeman reached on a walk. A balk by Pena moved the runners to second and third. Mejia then increased his RBI total to 19 with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Wimberly. Terdoslavich added the final run of the night by doubling in Freeman from second.

Berken (L, 0-1) suffered the loss, giving up six earned runs over 4.1 innings of work. Pena worked 1.2 innings with two earned runs on two hits. Right-hander Jhan Carlos Marinez, left-hander David Purcey and right-hander Jeff Gray all turned in scoreless innings for the Knights.

Gwinnett's 12-hit night was led by Constanza and Wimberly, as both went 3-for-5. Terdoslavich went 2-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI. Mejia drove in two runs on 1-for-2 hitting. Freeman finished 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored.

Charlotte's five hits were collected by five-different players. Josh Bell, Seth Loman and pinch-hitter Bryan Anderson all doubled in the losing effort.
