Rochester Red Wings News Release

Scranton/WB RailRiders (5-6) @ Rochester Red Wings (2-11)

Frontier Field - Rochester, N.Y. - 7:05 p.m.

RHP Dellin Betances (0-1, 15.43) vs. RHP Virgil Vasquez (1-1, 6.30)

TODAY'S GAME: The Red Wings (2-11), off to their worst start since at least 1940, enter tonight's series finale against Scranton/WB looking to put an end to their 7-game losing skid and snap a 20-inning scoreless streak in the process. Meanwhile, the RailRiders have now won 4 games in a row after starting the season 1-6. Going back to last season, Scranton/WB has won 10 of their last 13 games against Rochester. After hosting the RailRiders tonight, the Wings will welcome Boston's top affiliate, the Pawtucket Red Sox, to the Flower City for the first time in 2013 for a 4-game set Friday-Monday. Scranton/WB will return home to host the Syracuse Chiefs for 3 games.

FOR STARTERS: RHP Virgil Vasquez will make his 3rd start of the season for the Red Wings on Thursday night. Vasquez stopped the Red Wings first losing streak this season at 3 games on April 7 vs. BUF when he allowed 4 runs over 6 innings in a 14-5 Wings romp... The 30-year-old, who spent the entirety of the past 2 seasons pitching for Southern Maryland of the independent Atlantic League, has allowed a league-high 5 HR this season including a tied for career high 4 long balls (all solo) in his win on 4/7.

-Last year, Vasquez tossed 254.1 innings w/ S. Maryland and Perth (Australia) including 192.2 with S. Maryland... In perspective, Charlotte's Charlie Shirek led the IL last season with 170.1 IP

BASE ON BALL BETANCES: RHP Dellin Betances will make the start for SWB in the series finale after he was originally slated to face the Wings last Wednesday in the series finale in Moosic, PA that was rained out. The once highly regarded prospect, Betances has struggled the past 2 seasons including going 6-9, 6.44 ERA (94 ER/131.1 IP) in 2012 between Scranton/WB and Trenton (AA). Betances is just 0-1 with a 6.58 ERA (10 ER/13.2 IP) with 19 WALKS in 3 GS against the Wings from 2011-12. Last season, he walked a minor league high 99 batters (only Ricky Romero and Edinson Volquez walked more hitters in baseball - 105 BB each). For his career he has averaged 4.9 BB/9 IP (306 BB/561.1 IP).

WITH A WIN TONIGHT, THE WINGS...:

-Will avoid matching their 2012 high 8-game losing streak (4/25-5/2/12)... ROC lost 12 straight from 8/23-9/3/10

-Will avoid being swept in a 4-game series by SWB for the first time since 8/22-8/25/11

-Will avoid being swept in a 4-game series at Frontier Field for the first time since 8/26-8/29/10 vs. PAW

OVER THE 7-GAME LOSING STREAK...:

-Rochester is hitting .177 (38-for-215) as a team with just 7 extra-base hits and have been outscored 42-9

-The Wings are 3-for-55 (.055) with runners in scoring position... and 1-for-43 with RISP in their last 5 games

-The Red Wings pitching staff has a 6.40 ERA (41 ER/57.2 IP) and allowed 18 extra-base hits

IN A DROUGHT: The Red Wings have been shutout in back-to-back games and haven't scored a run since the 7th inning of Monday's game -- a span of 20 innings. The last Red Wings RBI was Clete Thomas' leadoff home run on Sunday at Pawtucket -- a span of 37 innings. Their last two runs have come via errors.

-Last season, the Wings had a 24-inning (8/21-8/24) and 27-inning (6/10-6/14) scoreless drought

EARNING THEIR KEEP: The Red Wings committed 2 errors last night for the first time this season. 1B Chris Colabello's throwing error in the 3rd inning led to the Red Wings first unearned run allowed this season. Rochester was the last team in the IL to allow an unearned run this season and it was the farthest the Wings had gone into a season without allowing an unearned run since at least the 2005 season. The Wings are still the best defensive team in the league having committed just 6 errors in 464 total chances for a .987 fielding percentage.

VS. THE RAILRIDERS: The Wings and RailRiders split a 2-game series last week in Scranton/WB after the rubber match was rained out... On April 9, the Red Wings picked up their first win at the newly-renovated PNC Field since 7/10/11 after the two teams played all 16 games against each other at Frontier Field last year. The RailRiders won the 2012 series 10-6 and now own a 60-25 advantage over the Red Wings since 2008. The last time the Wings won a season series against Scranton/WB was in 2007 when the Wings went 11-5 against the Yankees' top affiliate.
