Redbirds' Big Bats Roll Past Zephyrs

Jamie Romak continued to hit Zephyrs pitching at a blistering pace, going 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, and Oscar Taveras added a double and home run to lead the Memphis Redbirds past New Orleans, 8-3 on Wednesday night at Zephyr Field.

Romak, who hit three home runs and against the Z's on April 8 in Memphis, drilled a three-run shot off Zephyrs starter Jacob Turner in the first inning on Wednesday. He also doubled in the fifth, singled in the ninth and drew two walks to complete a perfect night at the plate.

Taveras, regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball, connected off Turner for an opposite-field two-run shot in the fifth inning to stretch the Memphis lead to 6-0. Earlier, he got the Redbirds' first-inning rally started with a double down the left field line, then came around to score on Romak's home run.

Kolten Wong and Brock Peterson chipped in two hits apiece for Memphis, and Greg Garcia drove in two runs to back starter Seth Maness (2-1), who scattered three runs and 10 hits in six innings to earn the win.

The Zephyrs were held scoreless until the sixth inning, when Bryan Petersen reached on an infield single and Ben Lasater followed with his third home run of the year.

New Orleans managed to send the tying run to the plate in the seventh, when they chased Maness from the game. Wilson Valdez dumped a leadoff single into right field, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Koyie Hill.

Jorge Rondon came out of the Memphis bullpen and surrendered a single to Kevin Mattison, and two outs later walked Lasater to load the bases, but got Nick Green to fly out to end the threat.

Matt Diaz had three hits for the Zephyrs, who outhit the Redbirds 12-10 but went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine baserunners .

Turner (0-2) was charged with six runs - five earned - on five hits in five innings to take the loss. He struck out five and walked four.

The Zephyrs and Redbirds play the third game of the series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. New Orleans will start Elih Villanueva against Michael Wacha for Memphis .
