Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Norfolk right-hander Freddy Garcia allowed a run over 7.2 strong innings and the Tides (8-6) scored three unearned runs against David Hale to hand the Gwinnett Braves (6-8) a 3-2 loss on Wednesday night at Coolray Field. It is Gwinnett's sixth one-run loss already this season.

After dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker in the ninth inning the night before, the G-Braves fell behind early to the Tides on Wednesday. Chris Robinson reached on a fielding error by third baseman Alden Carrithers with one out in the third inning. After a walk to Jason Pridie, Niuman Romero's RBI single scored Robinson for a 1-0 Norfolk lead.

Russ Canzler followed with a single to load the bases, and the Tides looked primed for a big inning when Danny Valencia scorched a ball toward the left-center gap. However, centerfielder Todd Cunningham made a tremendous catch, robbing Valencia of an extra-base hit and three RBI.

The Tides added runs in the sixth and seventh innings, extending their lead to 3-0. In the sixth, Valencia singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch by Hale and moved to third on a fielding error by shortstop Paul Janish. He would come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Yamaico Navarro. In the seventh, Romero reached first on a two-out throwing error by Carrithers. He scored on an RBI double by Canzler.

Despite exiting with a 3-0 deficit, Hale (L, 1-1) was sharp for the G-Braves. He turned in 6.2 innings, allowing three unearned runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out two.

Hale received no support from the offense as a result of Garcia (W, 2-0), who held the G-Braves scoreless for six innings before giving up a run in the bottom half of the seventh. Gwinnett's lone run against him came in the seventh inning, as Jose Constanza doubled to start the frame and came around to score on an Ernesto Mejia RBI double, cutting the lead to 3-1.

In the ninth, the G-Braves added another run when Mejia's RBI single drove in Tyler Pastornicky, who had reached on a one-out double. Mejia's second RBI of the night cut the lead to one and brought the tying run to the plate, but Tides closer Jairo Ascencio (S, 5) got Jordan Parraz to ground out to end the game. Asencio recorded his IL-leading fifth save, tossing one inning, allowing two hits and one run.

Mejia led the offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, his IL-leading 14th and 15th of the year. Pastornicky extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 1-for-4 night.

Canzler and Romero each had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Tides.

The Gwinnett Braves finish the four-game series with the Norfolk Tides on Thursday night, first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Right-hander Tim Corcoran (1-0, 3.00) will start for the G-Braves against left-hander Zach Britton (0-0, 2.35) of the Tides. Listen to the radio broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM. The game will also be broadcast on tape delay on CSS starting at 7:30 PM.
