Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

April 16, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Starting the Second Season

The Clark Cup playoffs begin for the Hawks on Wednesday with a best-of-five series against the Fargo Force. Games One and Two will be on the road, before the series comes to Waterloo for Game Three on Sunday. During the regular season, Waterloo was 1-2-2 versus Fargo, with four of five games settled by one goal and two finishing in overtime. The Hawks have never met the Force - nor any of the preceding USHL clubs from Fargo - during the postseason, although Waterloo was lined up face the Fargo-Moorhead Bears during the 1996 playoffs until the Bears went bankrupt and were replaced in those playoffs by the Sioux City Musketeers.

The Top Three

Forwards Taylor Cammarata, Justin Kloos, and Zach Stepan finished first, second, and third in USHL scoring. The most recent prior league scoring champion from Waterloo was Jason Blake in 1993/94; the only previous occasion when Black Hawks have finished first and second was in 1991/92 when Peter Ferraro and brother Chris Ferraro topped the chart. Cammarata concludes his regular season career with more assists than any other Black Hawk (97), second in points (162), and fifth in goals (65). His 16 points during the playoffs last year are just eight shy of the franchise's career postseason record set by Joe Pavelski in 2003 and 2004.

Record-Tying Performances

The Black Hawks' 39 regular season wins this year match the best total in team history, achieved in 2006/07. Waterloo won their last eight consecutive games to reach that figure. The steak helped the Hawks secure their seventh consecutive playoff berth, a franchise record. Waterloo is 24-19 in the postseason over the last six years. Those 43 playoff contests are behind only to Green Bay (46) and Indiana (44) during the span.

Shootout Numbers

The Black Hawks won the final shootout of the season on Saturday by an official final of 3-2. That was also the score in the seven-round shootout. During 2012/13, the Hawks were 5-2 in shootouts, outscoring opponents 8-5. Taylor Cammarata led Waterloo with three conversions on six attempts. Saturday's seven-round affair was the longest shootout for the Hawks since going seven rounds during a 3-2 win against the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets on October 27, 2007. Less than 24 hours earlier, the Hawks had claimed another 3-2 decision against Ohio, also at the conclusion of a seven-round shootout.

Weekly Recap

Waterloo won the last two games of the regular season, sweeping the Indiana Ice 3-2 and 5-2 during a weekend road trip. Taylor Cammarata recorded two goals and an assist, one of five Hawks with multiple points. The victories were Waterloo's 18th and 19th on the road this season, a new franchise record.
