Seattle Storm Select Tianna Hawkins

The Seattle Storm went for size to open its WNBA Draft on Monday night, selecting Maryland forward Tianna Hawkins with its first-round choice.

The 6-3 Hawkins was one of several quality players still available when the Storm went onto the clock for the No. 6 overall selection.

Hawkins averaged 18.3 points and 9.5 rebounds this past season and was relied upon even more after the Terrapins lost four players to injuries - a group that included both starting guards.

She led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring and ranked No. 2 in rebounding.

Thanks in large part to Hawkins' play, Maryland went 26-8 overall, 14-4 in the ACC. It advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Hawkins was an All-ACC first-team selection after being a second-teamer in 2012.

As expected, Baylor star center Brittney Griner went to the Phoenix Mercury with the No. 1 choice. Delaware forward Elena Delle Donne was chosen No. 2 by the Chicago Sky, and point guard Skylar Diggins went to the Tulsa Shock at No. 3.

Also going off the board before coach and general manager Brian Agler selected for Seattle were Ohio State guard Tayler Hill to the Washington Mystics at No. 4 and Texas A&M center Kelsey Bone to the New York Liberty at No. 5.

On the honor roll: All-ACC first team in 2013; second team in 2012. ... Nominee for the 2013 Wooden Award, given to the nation's best player. ... WBCA All-America honorable mention in 2013.

Noteworthy: One of just three Terrapins in history (current WNBA players Marissa Coleman and Crystal Langhome are the others) with 1,000 career rebounds. She finished with 1,051. ... Led ACC in scoring and ranked No. 2 in rebounding, leading the conference in offensive boards. ... Shouldered more of the burden to help Maryland make the Sweet 16 after the Terrapins lost four players - including both starting guards - with injuries during the season. ... Hauled down a school-record 24 rebounds as a junior in a game against Wake Forest in 2012. ... Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior at Riverside Baptist High School in 2009.
